About the Department |
International Employment (IE) assists NC State to successfully employ and retain foreign national employees needing employment sponsorship on a temporary and/or permanent basis. IE stays current with relevant U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (
USCIS), Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, and Department of Labor regulations and policies, and provides education to the university community to facilitate understanding and compliance. |
Essential Job Duties |
The International Employment Specialist advises the NC State community and foreign national faculty and staff in the area of employment-based immigration and relevant governmental regulation and procedures. The IE Specialist, in collaboration with the IE Manager, prepares and files standard and complex immigration petitions filed with
USCIS, with particular focus on Outstanding Researcher permanent residence petitions and O-1 nonimmigrant petitions, and monitors and updates expiration dates and documentation regarding immigration status. The Specialist also provides high-level customer service and assistance to campus on a variety of immigration and visa issues.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Prepares some nonimmigrant and Outstanding Researcher (and occasional Extraordinary Ability) immigrant visa petitions by analyzing and integrating information from both the sponsoring department and foreign national employee;
- Utilizes multiple online government and University/UHR electronic systems, as well as the Sunapsis case management system to prepare and file immigration petitions; monitors case status both before and after filing.
- Develops and maintains professional working relationships that facilitate the accomplishment of goals and tasks.
- Answers simple and complex questions and resolves normal and complex issues relating to visa and immigration issues with limited management intervention.

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Ability to use web-based systems.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely convey verbal, nonverbal, and written information.
- Understanding of effective working relationships with customers and administrators. Ability to establish rapport and work effectively with people and populations from various countries and cultures.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Basic knowledge of preparing employment-based immigration cases, with a willingness to learn how to draft and file petitions, such as Outstanding Researcher and O-1 nonimmigrant petitions.
- Experience filling out government immigration forms, as well as the ability to navigate multiple governmental websites for compliance and case completion purposes.
- Working knowledge of immigration rules, procedures, and processes to complete assigned tasks.
- Experience or familiarity with Sunapsis case management system.
- Demonstrated knowledge of PeopleSoft (or similar HRIS), PeopleAdmin (or similar ATS), and other online project management and/or customer service systems.
