POSITION SUMMARY:

The Ophthalmic Technician will assist the Ophthalmologist with diagnostic and treatment-oriented procedures and administrative tasks under the general guidance of the Practice Manager and Physician.

EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an approved program for Ophthalmology Assistants (COA, COT, COMT).

EXPERIENCE:
Previous experience in an ophthalmology office.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
Completion of an approved program for Ophthalmology Assistants (COA, COT, COMT). BCLS certification preferred. Understanding of the operations of a medical practice preferred. Strong orientation towards the provisions of high quality, cost effective and comprehensive medical care. Ability to use effective organizational and time management skills to set priorities and respond quickly to urgent/emergent situations. Strong communication--both oral, written and presentation skills to convey information in a clear and concise manner to persons of varied age groups, customers and/or groups. Ability to create, maintain and support a high functioning team; establish and foster cooperative working relationships with staff and management; and function effectively as part of that team. Demonstrates behavior that is courteous, caring, respectful, and compassionate at all times. Demonstrates ability to listen and respond in a non-judgmental manner, with clear expectations. Knowledge of ultrasound, visual field, OCT, a-scan (such as IOL master), fundus camera, slit lamp and all other relevant office equipment. Basic knowledge of ocular and systemic diseases. Computer and typing skills necessary to effectively and efficiently utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye and diagnosis of ocular disease. Knowledge of medical terminology. People skills needed to have consistently positive patient interactions. Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively. Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing. Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, management and peers. Position may require rotating to other VMG locations from time to time when necessary.
