Description YMCA International Services is a unique branch of the YMCA of Greater Houston and seeks to meet the needs of Houston's significant refugee and immigrant communities. We provide comprehensive programs that focus on building human assets and fostering self-sufficiency. The Refugee School Impact Program (RSI) aims to mitigate barriers for both refugee families and local school personnel so that refugee families, school administrators, and teachers can truly focus on each individual child's academic performance and overall well-being. The ESL Instructor will provide English as a second language classes to adult participants in the RSI program for the purpose of reducing significant barriers refugee students and families face in adjusting to school and community. Duties /Responsibilities Responsibilities include:
- Teaching 16-20 hours of ESL classes per week to RSI program participants.
- Researching, developing, and delivering engaging and culturally appropriate ESL material for RSI clients.
- Provide courses during the time of day when clients are available. This may include a Saturday class or evening hours.
- Identifying and recruiting clients and managing referrals through community outreach.
- Meeting requirements of grant including determining client eligibility, maintaining digital databases, and reporting data.
- Completing required certifications and being familiar with updated resources.
- Reporting suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Following mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
- Meeting timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance. Example includes but are not limited to Kronos Workforce Ready for review and approval of time sheets.
- Welcoming new refugees with occasional airport pick-ups and occasional food distribution.
- Completing other duties as assigned.
Outcomes The instructor is responsible for the following:
- Conducting 16-20 hours of ESL classes per week.
- Enrolling 100 ESL students annually.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Education, English, or related field
- Experience in education with proven research & writing skills (Preferred)
- Native or near-native English speaker with proficiency in an additional language (Preferred)
- Fluency in a refugee language preferred, but not required
- Cultural awareness, sensitivity, and cultural competency
- Experience with and passion for working with diverse populations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to detail
- Ability to efficiently manage time and meet competing demands
- Computer skills with Microsoft Suite, databases, and office equipment
- Valid Texas driver's license, clean driving record, own transportation, applicable auto insurance.
- Office Hours: Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend hours as needed.
