The primary function of the Office of Undergraduate Research is to guide students through their undergraduate research journey (in all fields), with a key focus on helping students identify and engage in research opportunities that support their interests and education/career pursuits. By taking part in undergraduate research, a High Impact Experience, students gain valuable hands-on experience and critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Director for the Office of Undergraduate Research duties include, but are not limited to:

Student-Funded Programs
The Assistant Director manages student-facing OUR programming (organization, logistics, student interaction and communication, faculty/mentor interaction, and campus outreach). Current programs to be supported include:

  • Project supply grants
  • Travel awards
  • Federal Work-Study research positions.


Campus-wide Programs
The assistant director collaborates with the OUR director in the creation and implementation of campus-wide events promoting undergraduate research. Current events include:

  • 3 annual research symposia
  • 2 annual research slams
  • Workshops for student professional development and summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs
  • Mentor training program (PRIME the Pack) hosted several times a year
  • Promotion of office initiatives at open houses, new student orientation, student organizations, colleges and courses, etc.)

Student Mentorship
In conjunction with the OUR Director, the Assistant Director provides:

  • Individual mentoring and advising for students,
  • Travels to select research conferences with undergraduate presenters,
  • Supervises the OUR student Ambassadors
  • Provides guidance for faculty preparing undergraduate research programming.
  • Develops and delivers academic and professional development content in support of undergraduate research (for both the academic year and summer) and research communication. These include workshops that support summer undergraduate research programs directed by NC State faculty

Strategic Planning, Marketing and Leadership:
The assistant director collaborates with the OUR director in:

  • The creation and implementation of strategic planning,

  • OUR communications

  • OUR budget management
  • Development of partnerships and mentor recruitment and training

Other Responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strong communication and organizational skills
  • Experience working with and mentoring students
  • Experience working with faculty and staff
  • Project management experience
  • Experience with research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in field
  • Postdoc or similar research experience
  • Publication experience
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students in research
