Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
Reporting to the Director of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization, the Licensing Associate leads the commercial assessment of technology arising from N.C. A&T research. The Licensing Associate evaluates, advances and licenses N.C. A&T inventions by assessing intellectual property rights, exploring commercialization opportunities, and coordinating access to resources. The Licensing Associate develops and executes marketing and licensing strategies, identifies valuation and financial terms for license negotiations, helps draft and negotiate intellectual property-related agreements, and manages active license agreements. The Licensing Associate also helps the Office meet reporting obligations to inventors, patent counsel, licensees, and funding entities. |

Primary Function of Division: The Division of Research and Innovation is the official unit administering and managing sponsored program activities at N.C. A&T, including comprehensive pre-award and post-award functions, and is the administrative home for the Office of Compliance and Ethics. The Division is also responsible for transfer of technology arising from university research into the marketplace and engaging corporate sponsors in sponsored research projects. The Division interfaces with other administrative units such as Academic Affairs, Strategic Partnerships & Economic Development, Legal Affairs, Facilities, Information Technology Services, Purchasing, and Human Resources.
Primary Function of Office: The Office of Intellectual Property Development and Commercialization is charged with the cultivation, assessment, protection and commercialization of N.C. A&T intellectual property. The Office is the liaison between the Division and patent prosecution law firms, agencies and businesses, as well as the chief business and contractual link for technology transfer efforts, leading efforts to form partnerships with private businesses, both established companies and start-ups. The Office manages administration of the university's licensee relationships, facilitation of relationships with prospective licensees, and negotiating/revising/terminating licenses as needed. The Office also trains university researchers and students, encouraging them to engage in IP identification, protection, and commercialization. |
Minimum Requirements |
- Post-Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in a STEM, law, or business discipline; or an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a STEM or business discipline and two or more years of relevant experience in (a) technology transfer related to managing the flow of research innovation, invention disclosures, patent prosecutions, and technology commercialization or (b) Industrial business development experience.
