Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position |
Groundsworker is primarily responsible for planting, mulching, fertilizing, mowing, spraying, pruning, edging, trimming trees, plants and shrubs, and planting hedges. Duties include applying safety and operational care in using grounds equipment and tools. The incumbent must practice safety techniques; apply grounds keeping and horticulture practices in maintaining orderly landscape of University grounds. The Groundsworker coordinates work assignments as a team leader through the completion of projects; understand oral and written instructions; and is mindful of safety techniques. The incumbent also performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor. |
Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The Grounds Department provides maintenance and upkeep for the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. Other services include sanitation (trash collection and removal), grounds maintenance and upkeep, landscaping, moving/hauling, and setting up for special events. |

8 hrs M-F (between 6am-4pm); work overtime and alternate weekends (3 hrs on Saturday and 2 hrs on Sunday); REQUIRED to work during adverse weather (snow, ice, other emergencies) |

Duties |
Maintain campus grounds by cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, raking, trimming, pruning, mowing, weeding, edging, mulching, seeding, aerating, de-thatching, cultivating, digging, watering and various other activities.
Mixes and applies herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers on turf, trees, shrubs, ground covers, flowers and all other areas requiring weed and pest control on campus grounds.
Remove ice and snow on sidewalks, steps, commons and parking lots. Plow, shovel, spread ice melt to properly remove hazards.
Maintain and repair asphalt and dirt roads, parking lots, steps, sidewalks and all other exterior surfaces used for vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Remove, haul and dispose of solid waste and recycle materials from all campus grounds.
Assist in the installation of new landscaping and the renovation of existing landscaping and related infrastructure.
Install fences and sign posts, etc.
Move and haul, load and unload furniture and equipment, chemicals or other materials.
Arrange set-ups for special events per specific instructions.
Operate and maintain a variety of light and heavy equipment, and power tools relating to grounds maintenance and landscape installation.
Assists with trash collection including walking, policing and picking up debris, and emptying trash cans.
Drive pickup truck for trash collection as directed (
DOES
NOT drive sanitation truck).
Perform minor maintenance and repair. |
