Job Summary |
The Auburn University
College of Veterinary Medicine, in conjunction with the Alabama Department of Agricultural and Industries Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System, invites applicants for a combined residency and graduate program leading to the Master of Science degree in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences (
VBMS) with a focused specialty concentration in Avian Pathology. The
ACPV accredited program is designed for veterinarians seeking a career with the commercial poultry industry, diagnostic laboratories, universities, state and federal agencies or pharmaceutical companies.
At the end of training, Clinical Fellows will receive a certificate of residency completion Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences.
General goals of the program:
- Build competence and knowledge in economically significant, emerging and historical diseases of poultry
- Foster the development of a productive career in veterinary avian pathology and diagnostics
- Support the teaching and service missions of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine and Thompson-Bishop-Sparks Alabama State Diagnostic Laboratory
This program provides comprehensive training in aspects of poultry disease mechanisms, which are most relevant to avian health as well as the ability to use poultry pathology, immunology and microbiology as part of the systematic approach to disease or management related problem investigations.
Although residency training is combined with M.S. graduate degree training, candidates already possessing graduate degree(s) in pathology or other biomedical sciences are also encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions |
- Focus will be placed on an integrated comparative understanding of the pathophysiology of disease in commercial poultry flocks as it pertains to all aspects of poultry health and medicine.
- Emphasis is placed on correlating diagnostic pathology findings with relevant flock history, clinical assessment of the flock health status, differential diagnoses and establishing a list of additional procedures necessary for a definitive diagnosis.
- Intense practical experience in acquisition, handling and processing of specimens for ancillary microbial pathogen identification (bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitology) and toxicology, reviewing results, developing treatment and flock management plans is an integral component.
- Coursework in avian pathology, poultry science and relevant biomedical science is combined with practical diagnostic laboratory and field experiences.
- Thirty semester credit hours of coursework and the satisfactory completion of a final oral examination are required to complete the degree.
- Three, first author, scholarly case, original research or technical reports of a standard suitable for publication or that makes a significant contribution to the field of poultry veterinary medicine are also required.
- Candidates will become eligible to sit for the certifying examination of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians.
- Residents are mentored by AUCVM graduate faculty, AVDL diagnostic specialists and supporting individuals in the allied commercial poultry industries.
- Formal (rounds, seminars, and conferences) and informal interactions with clinical and basic scientific staff enhance the breadth of training.
- Residency training is further enriched through close associations with the Alabama Veterinary Diagnostic Regional Laboratories in Boaz and Elba, Alabama as well as the Department of Poultry Science located on the Auburn University main campus.
- Opportunities for attending regional and national meetings, workshops, and conferences are available.

Minimum Qualifications |
Currently enrolled as an Auburn University graduate student.
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (
DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution and demonstration of a vested interest in poultry health and diagnostics. |
