Fairfax County School Crossing Guards are responsible for controlling traffic to ensure the safe and orderly movement of student pedestrians to and from school. Monitors operation of wink-o-matic school flashing lights during opening and closing times and reports any malfunctions. Reports hazardous traffic conditions at student crossing locations.
SPECIAL NOTE: These are part-time positions with limited hours and no benefits when hired for one crossing (ten hours per week). Benefit eligible when two or more crossings (20+ hours per week). Please take into consideration your commute during peak hours when selecting a job announcement to apply to. Job announcements are completed on a police district-by-district basis. Open school crossing locations for each police district are listed in their respective job announcements.

Illustrative Duties

- Controls traffic at crossing to allow children to cross safely;
- Places school sentinel signs in the roadway at designated points near crossings and removes them before going off duty;
- Maintains discipline over children to ensure conformance with traffic and crossing regulations;
- Reports children who fail to cooperate;
- Instructs children in the safe and correct way to cross streets and in ways to identify a potential traffic hazard;
- Reports accidents, traffic violations and hazardous conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to: High school graduation or a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of traffic regulations.
- Ability to work with children.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Must possess tact and courtesy.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Driver's license (required)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child Protective Services, credit check, driving record check, pre-employment medical evaluation, and tuberculosis test to
the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Walking, good hearing, good vision.
