Would you like to be part of the team that supports critical wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, and capital facility infrastructure for the largest county in Virginia? The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks a Maintenance Crew Chief.
Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of maintenance and construction activities. Functions as a lead worker. Engages in routine manual labor as required. Organizes the work crew and estimates the amount of material necessary for each job. Responsible for ensuring crew's compliance with work rules and guidelines. Adjusts or constructs manholes, asphalt or concrete walkways, catch basins, headwalls, retaining walls, storm sewer pipe, cinder block and brick and other construction carpentry work as required. Operates various vehicles and equipment, such as the crew van, single-axle dump truck, small trailer, flat-bed truck, utility bucket truck, snow plow and spreader water truck. Loads and unloads mowing equipment from trailers. Operates snow blower and self-propelled riding mower. Performs equipment and vehicle maintenance checks.

Fairfax County's award-winning Stormwater team works to reduce flood risk and protect local watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay with comprehensive watershed and infrastructure management to protect people, the environment, and property.
Note: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Maintenance Crew Chief position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education; and two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
- Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).
- Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to follow and relay oral instructions to labor crew in performance of work orders.
- Experience in site sedimentation and erosion control measures.
- Experience in preparing safety tailgate topics for crew and presenting safety topics at meetings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. Performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal). Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. Replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
