USC Summer Programs offers students a preview of "freshman year" through its college immersion experience. Students explore Los Angeles as a laboratory for cultural learning beyond the traditional classroom. Our programs are designed to combine college level coursework, academic field trips, and structured extracurricular activities. USC Summer Programs offers 4-week courses in a variety of subjects from which students choose one course for intense study. Courses are interactive, engaging, and challenging, and students receive 3 units of transferrable USC elective credit upon successful completion of the 4-Week program.

Reporting to the Pre-College Coordinator of Pre-College Programs, the Residential Coordinator is a temporary full-time, live-in professional position supporting, roughly, 850 students and 86 residential assistant staff. This position performs a variety of important daily operational tasks related to supervision and staff oversight, student support, emergency and crisis management, housing operations, and residential experience. Given the nature of this position, this role requires the highest level of flexibility, communication, and a positive attitude to both students and peers.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an on-call residential lead to support the safety and security of the residence halls and residents. This includes evenings and weekends.

  • Must be able to work and live on campus for the entire duration of the program to ensure a safe and community-oriented experience for students and staff.

  • Assist with residential emergencies, including psychological, physical, mental health, and natural/environmental crises.

  • Serve as the Residential Lead staff member for weekday activities and weekend events hosted within the residence hall. This includes the planning and coordination of college admissions workshops, time management workshops, and additional workshops as it relates to students transitioning from high school to college.

  • Establish and maintain communication with commuter students and their parents/guardians regarding weekend off-campus recreational trips, schedule of weekday activities, and commuter policies. This includes developing and managing email campaigns and other communication opportunities for commuter students.

  • Monitor and administer Resident Advisor (RA) scheduling including on-call job duties, schedule conflicts, and time off schedule.

  • Provide oversight and guidance to RA staff, as it relates to social activities, delegate tasks appropriately, and oversee completion in alignment with expectations for student engagement and community building.

  • Maintain continuous lines of communication with RA staff via verbal communication as well as through emails, texts, and phone calls. This includes facilitating assigned weekly residence hall floor check-ins with RA staff.

  • Serve as the lead to RAs and students on an assigned residence hall floor and create and maintain an accepting, respectful, and friendly atmosphere that stimulates student learning and development.

  • Establish rapport with students and RA staff through attentive listening, genuine care and support, awareness of student needs, and appropriate consultation and referral.

  • Assist the summer programs team with mail & packages, including the physical pickup from Fedex and distribution of mail to students.

  • Work closely with the Academic Transportation Coordinator to support off-campus recreational trips, serve as a liaison to the busload team, and offer logistical insight for residential staff. Support academic field trips with student documentation release and permission forms.

  • Work with the Associate Director of Admissions and Residential Life to oversee student absences and tardies.

  • Enforce university policies, USC Summer Programs policies, confront student behavior, and document student actions and/or situations when necessary.

  • Participate in leadership team check in meetings and report updates to Senior Admin team.

  • Other duties as assigned by department leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Supervisory experience within residence life /residential education

  • Experience working with youth/young adults

  • Superior writing and communication skills

  • Ability to understand the unique social-emotional needs of individual students

  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and competency

  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and perform well under pressure

  • Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Prior experience working with high school students, summer programs, and/ or residential programs.

  • Prior experience coordinating social activities and events, involvement in campus-wide processes such as residential move-in, move-out, and welcome events.

  • Friendly demeanor and helpful attitude.

  • Problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to remain patient and professional during stressful situations.

  • Ability to work responsibly with or without direct supervision.

Required Position Dates and Work Schedule

  • Summer Prep: Tuesday, April 1 - Tuesday, June 10, 2025 (approximately 10 - 15 hours/week)

  • Summer Program RA Training & Programming: Wednesday, June 11 - Sunday, July 13, 2025 (full-time, live-in dates with evening and weekend hours required)

Compensation

  • The hourly rate for this position is $30/hour

  • Room and Board in USC Housing

  • USC Hospitality Residential Dining meal plan with three meals provided daily, including weekends

  • Planned Recreational and Program Activities, including the paid cost of admission fees and transportation. Past trips have included: Knott's Berry Farm Amusement Park, and Santa Monica Beach/3rd St. Promenade
