Laboratory Processing Rep II

General Summary of Position
Processes laboratory specimens for laboratory testing in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) or for a Reference Laboratory.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as customer service contact for the Specimen Processing or Sendout Services area of the laboratory. Interacts with internal/external customers including a wide variety of physician customers regarding laboratory testing. Provides accurate information regarding specimen requirements for test procedures and availability of services. Provides information regarding status of specimens and confirmed test results. Responds to and resolves customer problems.
  • Reviews physician requests and inputs tests into laboratory information systems and/or other interfaced computer systems. Identifies, labels, processes, packages and sends out specimens to defined labs as required.
  • May register patients in Invision for specific cases. Follows special specimen handling requirements of the laboratory. Implements infectious specimen transportation requirements as defined by regulations. May be required to receive final reports from reference laboratories and inputs results into the laboratory information system. Assures final reports are received for all tests sent out to reference laboratories.
  • Assists physicians, pathologists, and laboratory management in establishing routine, esoteric and send-out procedures for highly specialized testing which may require reference lab testing.
  • Medstar Diagnostic Laboratory staff assures that billing data is accurately input for all tests; interfaces with appropriate management personnel to implement billing procedures when new types of tests are requested.
  • Documents workload, quality assurance problems, customer complaints, routine, esoteric and send-out information accurately and completely.
  • Keeps work area in a clean and organized manner at all times. Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments, computers, telephones and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
  • May be requested to perform quality control checks on requisitions, so that correct test requests and billing information is realized. Timely corrections of errors and documentation of incorrect data will be required.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • May require up to l year of technical or other specialized training, such as on-the-job training in laboratory processing including reference lab training. required

    Experience

    • 6 to 12 months work experience required


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
    • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.

    This position has a hiring range of $20.039 - $30.385
