Job Summary

The Senior Director of Recreation and Community Services is responsible for the overall administration of a multi-faceted, urban recreation agency. Primary duties include setting the strategic direction for the department; oversight of 106 full-time and more than 1,500 part-time employees; establishing and monitoring a budget in excess of $37 million; and championing a diverse array of recreation programs offered at more than 100 locations throughout the city of Milwaukee.

Salary: $120,837 - 174,607

Other Information

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Business Administration, Human Kinetics or related field is required.
  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP), or Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) required.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience including at least seven (7) years of administrative level experience in urban recreation.
Responsibilities

  • Sets the overall strategic direction of the Recreation Department.
  • Directs the planning and organization for Recreation Department core functions including After School Programs, Citywide Programs, Compliance, Operations, Recreation Facilities Maintenance and Design, Sports and Athletics and Playgrounds and Community Centers.
  • Manages the preparation of a $37 million budget.
  • Provides direction and guidance to a team of 106 full-time staff and more than 1,500 part-time employees.
  • Determines staff development needs and seeks or assists with training.
  • Reviews position responsibilities, ensures adequate staffing, and recruits and recommends for hire a diverse group of candidates.
  • Meets regularly with Recreation Department leadership team and works collaboratively with 4 direct reports to establish goals and priorities, provides guidance, and identifies new and innovative ways to improve recreation programs.
  • Monitors the progress of capital improvement projects related to the Recreation Facility Master Plan.
  • Approves fees and charges and provides final approval for all departmental expenditures and contracts.
  • Prepares reports regarding department activities, accomplishments, and goals.
  • Updates existing and develops new policies and procedures to ensure compliance with department operations.
  • Administers personnel procedures and policies in accordance with the Districts employee handbook. Reviews and approves all disciplinary recommendations.
  • Ensures program equity and opportunity to all residents of the community.
  • Meets with community partners and nurtures partnerships to maximize resources.
  • Conducts program site visits and supports Recreation Department special events.
  • Develops and presents board items as necessary.
  • Responds to requests for information and constituent complaints.
  • Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
