Position Function
The Associate Director reports to the executive director of academic advising and assists in the overall management and administrative direction of academic advising. The Associate Director leads the internal operations of the first year advising team and in consultation with the Executive Director of Advising and the Associate Dean of University College, is responsible for implementing long-term strategic plans for first year advising. The Associate Director supervises a team of academic advisors who work directly with first-year students. The position coordinates first-year registration periods and other related activities associated with the academic advisement of first-year students.
Minimum Education
Earned master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Minimum Experience
Five years of experience with innovative student success and retention initiatives in a higher education setting. Three years of academic advising experience.
Minimum Other

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple simultaneous projects with attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to form collaborative relationships with other University Offices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of technology that supports student success including predictive analytics, data analysis, and student facing software.


Authorization to work in the US Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Education
Doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution.
Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Ball State's academic advising programs.
  • Experience developing strategic partnerships that support interdisciplinary approaches to student success.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing academic advising practices.


Preferred Other

Job Duty
Coordinate and direct all functions of first-year advising; responsible for hiring, training, and directing the work of full-time first-year academic advisors, providing mentoring, coaching, regular feedback, managing performance, and conducting reviews for staff that report to the position.

Coordinate summer orientation program, including summer and winter registration activities, transfer orientation programs, participation in first-year advising welcome week activities, and other related activities.

Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean of University College and Executive Director of Advising to ensure smooth student transitions to major-based advising.

Monitor advisor utilization of EAB Navigate and ensure compliance with University College protocols associated with proactive advising and proactive case management.

Lead initiatives designed to educate, guide, and empower students to engage in the advising experience at Ball State, especially students new to the university.

Work collaboratively with Advising Leadership Council to develop and maintain academic advisor training and mentoring programs, an advisor resource hub, and other professional development opportunities.

Work collaboratively with campus advising leadership from the Honors College, Student Athlete Support Services, and Ball State Online to develop modern advising strategies that promote a consistent advising experience across each advising unit.
