Minimum Qualifications |

- Prior experience with electron microscopy (sample preparation, microscope operation, and/or data analysis)

Position Summary |
Georgia Electron Microscopy (
GEM), a core facility at the University of Georgia, seeks to fill a staff position for a Laboratory Professional. The incumbent will work independently, as well as with staff, faculty, and students, to meet the electron microscopy needs related to the biological research and training activities of GEM's user community. Current services include sample preparation and imaging by conventional
TEM and cryoSEM, and cryoTEM. The incumbent will help manage laboratory activities and equipment related to cryoelectron microscopy systems and sample preparation. |

- Basic knowledge of cell and tissue ultrastructure
- Basic knowledge of protein structure
- Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials
- Detail oriented and able to maintain accurate lab records and handle data efficiently

- Operate and maintain the cryo-transmission electron microscope and related sample preparation equipment (Serving as the primary staff member of this role)
- Assisting users with hands-on training of this equipment, as well as with image acquisition and data management.

- Work with users to prepare biological samples for conventional TEM and SEM imaging (e.g., fixation, dehydration, embedding in resin, critical point drying, sputter coating, histochemical/immunogold labeling of proteins, negative staining, etc.) These activities will heavily utilize ultramicrotomy to prepare samples for imaging by trimming and sectioning of biological tissues submitted by users.

- Serve as the secondary staff member to operate and maintain the conventional TEM and cryoSEM imaging systems.
