The Advanced Practice Provider Director is a clinical expert and an administrative leader who oversees multiple Advanced Practice Provider (APP) teams with a supporting management structure in provision of the organization, service line (as appropriate), and departmental missions. This role supports APP managers in their day-to-day operations and ensures that multiple teams are able to meet patient care needs, research, education, professionalism, and regulatory compliance . The APP Director will develop and execute strategic plans in collaboration with the Chief Administrator of Advanced Practice, as well as clinical administrative and medical leadership. This is operationalized by optimization of staffing models across teams, development and institution of best practices in APP workflows, implementation of strategies for recruitment and retention, and management of teams' budget to ensure financial sustainability. This position will lead APPs practicing across the continuum, integrating the boundaries of setting or entity. The APP director will have an integral role in identifying and developing future APP leaders. The APP Director has exemplary clinical practice and devotes time to both consistent clinical practice duties and administrative work.
Administration:
- Partners with appropriate administrator and key medical leadership, in a collaborative triad model, in order to conduct strategic oversight and development of APP practice for a patient population / service line across the continuum of care
- Develops programs which address continuous quality improvement, system enhancement, streamlined processes and overall APP performance
- Manages, supports and is accountable for the day to day operations and quality of output from front-line APP Managers
- Incorporates benchmark data in the design and implementation of APP staffing models
- Utilizes LEAN methodology in addressing specific service related opportunities for improvement
- Accurately forecasts and manages budget for the department(s) and ensures that any expenditures are within the budget.
- Ensures interventions to optimize employee engagement are instituted on teams
- Facilitates two-way communication between front-line APPs and managers to senior leadership in the medical center
- Partners with other UVA Health leaders to ensure fiduciary obligations are met and proper fiscal management is in place with a focus on quality improvement and cost effectiveness
- Provides oversight for areas of responsibility and guidance/mentoring for the leaders of those areas. Determines the need for and priority of allocation of human, space, fiscal and material resources.
- Collaborates with Human Resources to monitor and evaluate turnover and recruiting issues
- Plans, implements, and supervises administrative and operational activities for a section/department of APPs as it relates to productivities and regulatory compliance
- Performs annual performance reviews for APP Managers
- Monitors trends in FPPE/OPPE metric performance for teams and works with managers to address areas of practice needing improvement
- Ensures compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements specific to the practice areas managed
- Supports managers in disciplinary performance reviews and action planning
- Meets with other APP Directors to collaborate on common initiatives and goals related to advanced practice across UVA Health
- Ensures leadership succession planning is in place
- Creates an environment which is blame free, where a spirit of appreciative inquiry flourishes and thinking outside the box and taking risks is a system priority
Leadership:
- Direct Reports: Directs and supervises APP Managers and, in some cases, front-line APPs via the manager role within their given patient population, service line, and/or department
- Indirect Reports: Has consultative responsibilities and influence in APP practice in non-medical center APPs that practice within the patient population, service line, and/or department overseen by the Director
Professional:
- Works collaboratively with Chief Administrator of Advanced Practice, service line leadership, medical directors and department chairs, finance, human resources, recruiting, and other leaders to ensure consistent high quality APP work
- Maintains relationships with the school of nursing and other academic partners to fulfill our educational mission
- Advocates for APPs to practice at the extent of their training and licensure; identifies and partners to remove barriers to APP practice
- Acts as an advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the APP profession
- Maintains board certification, state licensure, and continuing education as outlined by hospital, state, and federal policy
- Serve as an expert resource for APP licensure, credentialing, privileging, scope of practice, and regulatory compliance within their service area/s
- Works to improve processes, performance, and programs to enhance departmental outcomes.
- Creates and directs policy decisions within service area.
Clinical:
- Provides excellent direct patient care in specialty population based upon respective advanced practice role, credentialing, and privileging
- Facile in thorough and accurate documentation that reflects patient status and plan of care
- Demonstrates competency in all procedures and skills considered essential in their area of practice
- Orders, recommends, and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within their scope of practice
- Prescribes medications and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities, as indicated within their scope of practice
- Provides expert consultation within practice group and with other members of the interdisciplinary team
- Facilitates and promotes evidence based practice that supports patients in their attainment of individualized health goals
- In addition to the above responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Position Compensation Range: $127,857.60 - $204,568.00 Annual
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Master's or Doctorate in Nursing (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Certified Nurse Midwife); Master's or Doctorate in Science (Physician Assistant). Experience: 5 years as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Certified Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant. 2 years of experience as an APP lead or manager. Licensure: Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and licensed to practice as a Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Certified Nurse Midwife in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS certification. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) required for selected clinical practice settings. Other certifications may be required to be obtained after hire depending on the clinical setting.
