The Position

This position works under designated Barnegat Bay Partnership (BBP) staff to conduct various field and/or laboratory projects and other project tasks including but not limited to data entry, data compilation, data analyses, report preparation, and public presentations. The Field and Lab Technician I may serve as the leader of a team of employees and/or volunteers on some field projects.

What You Will Do

1. Under the direction of full-time staff, leads field team conducting various field and laboratory projects, including but not limited to water quality testing, wetland and/or habitat monitoring, jellyfishes and fisheries monitoring and assessment.

2. Oversees maintenance of field and laboratory equipment (water quality meters, lab and field gear) in good working condition, and reports issues to designated personnel.

3. Collects and enters data into template electronic file formats or databases; reviews and/or coordinates quality assurance and control with other staff. Under supervision, organizes data graphically or statistically, for inclusion in reports.

4. Conducts project-specific literature reviews and drafts short sections for reports and presentations.

5. Stays current in all Ocean County College Right-to-Know policies, safety-related procedures, and workplace regulations.

6. Communicates with the public informally and formally on assigned projects via presentations, reports or other media (e.g., blogs).

7. Related projects and other duties as assigned.


The Successful Candidate Must Have

1. Education and experience as outlined below.

2. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access or similar database and the use of the Internet and web browsers.

3. Ability to lift 30 lbs., pull in heavy seine nets and conduct field work in challenging environments (e.g., tidal wetlands, aboard boats, etc.).

4. Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing.

5. Rate determined by qualifications as follows:

a. $21.00/ hour: Masters degree in related discipline and at least two years of experience in laboratory, field, or other technical work, including the preparation of documents and the delivery of verbal and written communications to various audiences.

b. $19.00/ hour: Bachelors degree in any discipline and at least one year of experience in laboratory, field, or other technical work, including the preparation of documents and the delivery of verbal and written communication to a variety of recipients.

c. $17.00/ hour: Sophomore standing with successful completion of 30 College Credits currently enrolled in a biological or environmental discipline and prior work experience.


Even Better If You Have

1. Two years of prior experience with water quality testing, estuarine or freshwater field work.

2. One year of experience working aboard, operating, and trailering a boat.

3. Completion of a valid NJ (or other US Coast Guard approved) boating safety course.
