RN OI Inpatient Nursing

Purpose of Job:

This position is responsible for the delivery of individualized patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice as defined by Ridgeview, the Minnesota Nurse Practice Standards Act, and the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.

Job Functions:

1. Conducts an individualized patient assessment, prioritizing the data collection based on the patient's immediate condition or needs within the timeframe specified by policies, procedures, or protocols.

2. Develops an individualized plan of care for the patient, reflecting collaboration with other members of the healthcare team. Evaluates and documents ongoing progress. Revises the plan as needed based on assessment data.

3. Provides whole-person nursing care, performs appropriate treatments as ordered, and demonstrates nursing competencies, including those specific to orthopedics.

4. Maintains accurate medical records and reports that reflect patient assessment data, responses to care and treatments, and other information pertinent to patient's care and status.

5. Communicates and collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary care team to provide optimal care to patients.

6. Serves as a patient advocate in seeking and coordinating appropriate community resources to meet patient needs.

7. Provides individualized education to the patient and their family/significant other on treatment and care plans, including self-care instructions for after discharge.

8. Recommends opportunities for and actively participates in quality improvement activities.

9. Enhances own professional nursing practice through participation in professional development activities of self and others.

10. Sustains a patient-centered approach in all aspects of nursing care and work.

11. Ability to adapt to changes within the care environment while keeping focus on exceptional patient care and positive outcomes.

12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Location: The Orthopedic Institute Inpatient Care Unit will be the primary location. May also provide care in the pre-operative and post-anesthesia (phase 2 recovery only) areas at the Orthopedic Institute. May float to other medical-surgical units at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.

When functioning as a Charge Nurse at the Orthopedic Institute Inpatient Unit:

1) 1. Manages flow of patients through the inpatient area and other departments.

2) 2. Assigns resources to care for patients and arranges staffing to ensure safe patient care.

3) 3. Provides work direction and addresses issues during the shift. Actively involved with emergency responses on unit to provide support and direction as appropriate.

4) 4. Acts as a liaison between and communicates effectively with all colleagues, the interdisciplinary care team, and patients.

5) 5. Demonstrates unit-specific Charge Nurse competencies.

Minimum Education/Work Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing

  • Capable of making independent decisions with the use of good critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work and multi-task in a high stress and fast paced environment
  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above

License/Certifications


  • Current professional nurse licensure in Minnesota or if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process
  • Healthcare Provider Basic Life Saving Support (BLS) certification through the American heart Association, or equivalent within 90 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Bachelors in the Science of Nursing (BSN)
  • Prior experience in orthopedic nursing care
  • Nursing certification in orthopedic or medical-surgical nursing
  • Prior nursing unit-leadership experience (i.e., Charge Nurse, Preceptor, etc.)
