Job Description Summary
The Career Services Counselor/Coordinator is a 2 year grant funded position, and will support the job placement and career development efforts for participants of the McCormick Grant's " Capacitacion para el Trabajo y Avance" (CAPTA) initiative in Little Village. This individual will work closely with the Project Manager, Little Village CAPTA partners, and participants to create pathways into general carpentry, solar energy and medical office assistant workforce opportunities. This role will assist in coordinating employment-related services such as resume building, interview coaching, and job search assistance while establishing relationships with employers to secure job and apprenticeship placements.

Responsibilities
Responsible to model the University Mission through dedicated job performance, service excellence to constituencies, respectful collaboration, and active support of the University's Mission in Catholic and Lasallian higher education.

Participant Support:

  • Assist participants with career counseling, job readiness preparation, and individual career plans.
  • Help schedule and conduct one-on-one meetings with participants to review career goals, improve resumes, and strategize job searching methods.
  • Collect salary and income information.
  • Provide guidance in resume development, interviewing skills, and career exploration in construction and other industries.
  • Collaborate with CAPTA partners to ensure participants receive wrap-around services, such as mental health support, advocacy, and case management


Employer Engagement:

  • Assist the Workforce Job Developer in building and maintaining relationships with employers, unions, and apprenticeship programs in Chicago.
  • Help identify potential employers and job opportunities for program participants in the construction sector and other fields.
  • Support the planning of networking events, job fairs, and employer meetings to connect participants with opportunities.
  • Communicate regularly with employers regarding participant job readiness, placement opportunities, and progress.

Program Coordination:

  • Coordinate with CAPTA partners to track participant progress and document services rendered.
  • Assist with organizing workshops focused on job readiness skills, including communication, teamwork, and mock interviews.
  • Help manage participant records, ensuring accurate documentation of job placements, income projections, career plans, and outcomes.
  • Assist in preparing reports on job placements and outcomes for internal and external stakeholders.

Community Collaboration:

  • Work closely with community-based organizations to ensure participants receive comprehensive support services, including advocacy for Little Village residents including those communities representing immigrants, LGBTQ+, re-entry, and Opportunity Youth populations.
  • Represent Institute for Workforce Education at Lewis University (IWE@LU) at community meetings, job fairs, and events to strengthen program visibility and engagement.

Minimum Qualifications
-Qualified candidates must hold a bachelor's degree.
-One to three years of higher education or relatable experience is preferred.
-Must be an energetic and motivated candidate who excels at building relationships and works well in a collaborative environment.
-Must demonstrate strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills both in English and Spanish.
-Computer literacy skills must include MS Office tools.
-Ability to deal with several tasks and work with a large number of individuals concurrently, often without supervision.
-A valid Illinois driver's license and a safe driving record required.
