Medical Laboratory Technician I

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Performs high complexity medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease as part of the on the job clinical experience for the MLT or MLS career ladder..

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA)-designated General Supervisor (Medical Laboratory Scientist), performs laboratory testing according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner.

3. *Analyzes test results and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards, policies, and procedures.

4. *Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data. Analyzes unacceptable quality control results and troubleshoots shifts or trends as necessary.

5. *Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary. Notifies immediate supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls Service regarding issues.

6. *Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting patient cart testing and results, appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly, concisely and courteously; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.

7. *Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.

8. *Works collaboratively with all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and communication of necessary information to assist testing completion.

9. Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcomes to help improve department operations; assists with LEAN projects.

10. Performs service excellence must-haves to achieve an excellent patient/customer experience.

11. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

12. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

13. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge gained as a Specimen Processing Technician 2 of clinical laboratory equipment/instrumentation, test procedures and standards.

2. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

3. Skill gained during on the job clinical training in the use and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.

4. Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to practical situations.

5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

6. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and engage critical thinking skills.

7. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

8. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

10. Ability to work as a team member.

11. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

12. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

13. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Prior experience as a Specimen Processing Technician II required. Bachelor's degree or above in a chemical, physical or biological science meeting American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) criteria for Medical Laboratory Technician certification or Technologist in Blood Bank, Microbiology, Hematology or Chemistry certification required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

*Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.
