About the Position

This role uniquely combines public outreach, civic engagement, and STEM education. You will help the community understand flood risks by participating in a wide variety of public outreach activities. By focusing on increasing awareness, you can help influence behaviors and ultimately transform flood risk awareness into flood protection action in both youth and adult Maricopa County residents.

Although the Flood Control District has made significant progress over the years, work remains to be done. We Require

  • One year of public relations, public outreach, or professional training experience
  • A Bachelor's degree with major coursework in communications, journalism, public relations, public administration, education, or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

We Also Value

  • Public speaking experience
  • In-class experience at the elementary and/or middle school level

Job Contributions

  • Attends virtual school STEM nights and in-person classroom events to promote the District's STEM curriculum
  • Increases public awareness of flood and stormwater issues through presentations to students at schools and the general public at special activities, events and conferences
  • Assists in the production of outreach communications, including internal employee newsletters, articles for professional journals, entries for awards, annual reports, public service announcements, and other projects as needed
  • Creates and updates educational fact sheets, brochures and other public education materials as needed
  • Assists in the creation and delivery of adult flood awareness educational programs
  • Other Job Duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - This model combines elements of both in-person and remote work. Employees split their time between working from a physical location (e.g., an office) and working remotely (from home or another location). The ratio of in-office to remote work can vary based on company policy or individual needs, offering more flexibility than a fully in-person role
  • Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree
  • The position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
