Position description

The University of California, Davis Department of Radiology is recruiting for a full-time clinical medical physicist with expertise in Nuclear Medicine at the Assistant rank in the In Residence series or Clinical "X" series.

Faculty in the In Residence series are expected to engage in teaching, independent research, and creative work, demonstrate professional competence and activity, and provide University and public service.

Faculty in the Clinical "X" series are expected to engage in professional competence and activity, teaching, research and creative work, and University/public service.

The Division of Medical Physics within the Department of Radiology is searching for a team member to continue to advance and transform medical imaging through both excellence in clinical care and research innovations. The position requires teaching, research, and clinical involvement with all aspects of nuclear medicine. The candidate will be expected to lecture on all topics related to Nuclear Medicine and Computed Tomography (CT), such as system components, reconstruction, radiation dosimetry, and clinical protocols) to radiology residents, other physician groups, medical physics residents, and students. Teaching duties include the occasional teaching of clinical staff, such as technologists, physicians, nurses, etc. Particularly during the introduction of a new hardware, quality control workflow, or protocol.

The candidate will actively make a significant research impact on nuclear medicine physics/technology and related research areas via their independent research program and contribute to facilitating cross-departmental research efforts in collaboration with other PhD and MD faculty. The successful candidate will also participate in professional and healthcare conferences and in training programs to represent the interests of UC Davis and advance Radiology Physics practice. Among its many resources, UC Davis features a unique high-sensitivity & resolution PET/CT scanner which can be leveraged for both clinical and technical research projects.

The successful candidate will actively support the clinical imaging operation to ensure top-quality clinical service, working with physicians to address issues such as those relating to clinical image quality. The primary focus of these activities will be on Nuclear Medicine imaging platforms with support on other imaging modalities as needed. Experience in Radiation therapy and Radiation Oncology physics is also desired, as the Medical Physicist may be the interface between the Departments of Radiology and Radiation Oncology for imaging studies. The physicist will be responsible for instrumentation physics, shielding design, and accreditation evaluations to ensure compliance and adherence to regulatory requirements. They will direct and oversee quality control and assurance, dose calculations, and treatment planning. They will advise and assist with transitions to new systems, including new hardware, new quality control, and new protocols.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, Imaging Science or a related field

  • Have strong expertise in all aspects of nuclear medicine, including whole body PET/CT systems, SPECT/CT systems, hardware operation and configuration, reconstruction protocols, and pre-and post-processing procedures.

  • Track record of conducting research in the field of medical imaging, specifically demonstrating a focus on nuclear medicine

  • Experience of providing technical support and quality control in a clinical imaging environment, in collaboration with radiologists and technologists.

  • Experience with information technology and data handling in the medical imaging context

  • Evidence of scholarly activity demonstrated by publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals and presentations at national/international conferences

  • Have hands-on experience in performing quality assurance and acceptance testing on commercial nuclear medicine scanners, including characterization of image quality and radiation dose metrics, ACR accreditation procedures, and determination of system accuracy, etc.

  • Familiarity with dosimetry and treatment calculations


Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  • Experience with multi-disciplinary collaboration across a range of medical disciplines

  • Experience in academic teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level and with residents

  • Experience in academic mentoring

  • Experience with academic/industry partnerships

  • Diagnostic imaging physics certification by American Board of Radiology or American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine
