Description
The Clinical Supervisor will work under the direction of the Director of Respiratory Care Services (RCS) and RCS Medical Director to organize and apply staff and program efforts. This incumbent is the front-line representative for Respiratory Care Services (RCS) Management. The incumbent will have direct oversight of operations on night shift; assuring by observation and audits that clinical practices are aligned with department and hospital guidelines. The Supervisor will, in collaboration with RCS Clinical Manager, develop and monitor direct reports; generating and administering corrective actions as needed and completing annual performance evaluations.
As a clinical expert the incumbent advocates for patient safety and clinical outcomes. The Clinical Supervisor is expected to have vast experience in pediatric and neonatal respiratory care; to have sound judgment, troubleshooting, and ability to be a resource in all patient care areas. The Supervisor will take a bedside assignment at least once a week and ensure adequate staffing coverage on the shift. The incumbent is a role model for professional communication and escalates concerns to the Clinical Manager as needed.
In addition to clinical leadership, the Supervisor assists the Clinical Manager and Director with establishing best practices and collecting data for department performance dashboards. The Supervisor assists with development of department policy and procedures and performance improvement activities. The incumbent will also support education, training, and competency initiatives required for Respiratory Therapists. The Supervisor supports department activities required to assure compliance with The Joint Commission and Department of Health regulations.
The Clinical Supervisor reports to the Director of Respiratory Care Services.
Qualifications
Minimum Education Associate's Degree Respiratory Care (Required) Bachelor's Degree (Required)
Minimum Work Experience 5 years At least 5 years of Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care experience in a pediatric setting. (Required) 3 years At least 3 years experience in supervisory role or progressively responsible leadership in respiratory care; charge therapist, shift lead, educator, etc. (Required)
Required Skills/Knowledge Exercise good judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information and situations. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Required Licenses and Certifications Registered Respiratory Therapist Credentialed by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
RCP License from the District of Columbia DOH Health Regulation and Licensing Administration. (Required) Basic Life Support (BLS) (Required) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) (Required) Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (Required) (Preferred)
Functional Accountabilities Leadership
- Appropriately utilize the defined chain of command and escalation policies.
- Ensure staff therapists provide patient care according to Hospital, Respiratory Care Services Department, and other interdepartmental policy and procedures to all age ranges of patients treated at CNMC when in charge of the shift.
- Attend management team meetings held by RCS Leadership.
- Operate as a resource person throughout the entire organization, to interface with interdisciplinary team members in all respiratory care services, education, and performance improvement/quality assurance related matters.
- Embraces changes/improvements and actively participates in the implementation of new/improved programs, technology, new equipment, systems and resources that promote quality of care, safety and efficiency
- Participate in the accreditation/regulatory readiness program to continually assess current performance with The Joint Commission and DOH.
Clinical Performance
- Works beside assignment at least once a week.
- Responds to, assesses, and resolves emergency situations; escalates using chain of command as appropriate.
- Advocate for safe delivery of Respiratory Care modalities.
- Rotate shifts for weekends and/or holidays as assigned by Director.
Program Administration
- Performance management activities: coaching, counseling, and annual evaluation of direct reports.
- Ensure compliance with organizational and departmental policies for behavior, time, and attendance.
- Proficient in compiling and analyzing data for department performance dashboards.
- Assist in development and update of department policy and procedures.
- Maintain written records of performance issues discussed with staff.
- Review and facilitate follow-up to safety events.
- Conduct intermittent audits of therapists documentation in EMR for quality improvement purposes.
Staff Support
- Communicate effectively (orally and written) when handing off information; conduct daily huddles with staff assigned to shift.
- Assure shift assignments are appropriate; assess and redistribute resources as needed throughout the shift.
- Anticipate and respond to staff needs; follow-up until needs are met.
- Assure new employees are oriented to their job responsibilities in accordance with established orientation protocol.
- Provide performance feedback to all staff in a constructive, timely manner.
- Coordinate shift workflow to ensure respiratory services are provided in a timely and quality-oriented manner.
- Respond to staff and ancillary provider calls for assistance in a timely and respectful manner.
- Respond to inquiries and complaints on the shift.
Education
- Assist with development of training and in-services for RCS.
- Facilitate training sessions for RCS and multi-disciplinary teams as directed by RCS Leadership.
- Assure staff compliance with completion of departmental and hospital annual mandatories, licensure, and certifications required for RCP level.
- Assist with scheduling staff for certification course such as BLS, PALS, and NRP.
