Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under direction from the Director of Graduate Student Professional Development, plans and implements a program focused on graduate student academic achievement and professional development. Professional development programming focuses on areas such as academic and personal skills development; fellowship, dissertation and thesis writing; strategies for successful mentoring and degree completion; work-life balance; and identifying and achieving career goals. Other major events organized through the Graduate Student Resource Center include New Graduate Student Orientation, Grad Slam, and annual Beyond Academia conference. Must be able to work independently on assignments and troubleshoot in the absence of the Director. The Assistant Director has primary responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Graduate Student Resource Center (GSRC). Develops and implements marketing strategies and social media communication plan for the GradPost website and the GSRC social media channels. Assists with the creation and management of the annual program budget. Manages the graduate student peer advising program for the GSRC. Helps manage other major programming efforts such as Lunch & Learn, the Individualized Professional Skills Program. the Dissertation Write-In the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, and Reorientation for advanced PhD students. Conducts evaluation of professional development programming and recommends improvements for program effectiveness. Required Qualifications

Job Functions and Percentages of Time: Professional Development Program Implementation - 30% Under direction from the Director of Graduate Student Professional Development, plans and implements a program focused on graduate student academic achievement and professional development. Collaborates with other campus units to support graduate students' career development, job hunting, and job applications both within and outside of academia. Engages with staff and faculty in academic departments and research units to collect information on existing departmental practices in student academic and professional development. Evaluates and makes recommendations to improve the structure and delivery of academic and professional development programming. Helps the Director with decision making, goal setting, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals. Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and professional development resources. Develops and sustains strong collaborative relationships with the Division of Student Affairs (particularly Career Services), the Center for Science and Engineering Partnerships, the Office of Instructional Development, UCSB Library, and other campus student support units in order to best serve the graduate student population. Provides guidance to departments/colleges/schools on providing resources to meet students' professional development needs. Maintains a curated calendar of graduate student academic and professional development activities and services. Oversees the development and presentation of Graduate Division workshops on relevant topics including, but not limited to: developing presentation skills; tips for making timely academic progress; utilizing campus support services; searching for extramural funding; developing mentoring relationships with advisor, and acquiring career success skills and strategies. Recommends and implements modifications to workshops and presentations as necessary. Designs materials for presentations to students and campus professionals. Performs these duties independently, but may receive guidance in developing new professional development services and programs. GSRC Administrative Responsibilities - 25% The Assistant Director has primary responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Graduate Student Resource Center. Develops and implements marketing strategies and social media communication plan to best advertise and promote the Graduate Student Resource Center and campus-sponsored professional development programming for graduate students. Provides full content management and editing oversight to the Grad Post blog and GSRC Facebook page, including the curation and strategic timing of content and the development of effective content distribution. Assists the Director to create and manage a yearly budget for the GSRC. Works closely with the Division's Finance and Administration Manager to monitor expenditures and reimbursements. Ensures that program budget stays within estimates and that all transactions comply with University policy. Serves as an initial point of contact for graduate students at the Graduate Student Resource Center. Utilizing a theoretical understanding of professional development services, advises graduate students on a full range of processes, including individual or group meetings, professional development skills planning, setting career goals, and improving competencies. Provides a holistic approach to student professional development advising. Responds to student requests (by email, phone, or in person) for information or assistance, provides confidential advice, and makes referrals as needed. Responsible for management, development and evaluation of the graduate student peer advising program. Directly hires, supervises, and evaluates 3-4 graduate student employees, and assists with the management of additional graduate student employees who collaborate with the GSRC. Responsible for coordination of programming efforts among peer advisors who also serve as initial points of contact for students at the GSRC, advising or making referrals as appropriate. Major Events Coordination - 25% Coordinates major events for the Graduate Division including New Graduate Student Orientation; and Grad Slam; the Beyond Academia conference. Helps manage other major programming efforts such as Lunch & Learn, the Individualized Professional Skills Program, the Dissertation Write-In, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, and Reorientation for advanced PhD students. Event coordination responsibilities include budgeting, promotion, making location and catering reservations, distributing invitations and tracking RSVPs and attendance, arranging for presenters, and ensuring that events run smoothly. Understands ground-work for all events in order to serve as a liaison for the Graduate Division, campus, and other groups. Independently investigates and answers questions (fiscal, programmatic, etc.) brought by members of the Graduate Division or other campus staff or faculty. Independently trouble shoots any situations that may come up in the absence of the Director. Creates promotional materials for events. Provides accurate and timely information on Divisional website, UCSB GradPost (blog site), and social media. Fields questions from students, faculty, and staff regarding upcoming events. Program Reporting and Analysis - 15% Conducts evaluation of professional development programming. Tracks participant feedback using survey tools and uses feedback to recommend improvements to future events. Conducts longitudinal and annual data projects. Projects include analyzing historical information, synthesizing results and creating reports for the Director, Assistant Dean, and Dean related to overall program assessment learning outcomes. Conducts special assignments related to gathering information and documentation regarding program effectiveness. Other Duties - 5% Conducts historical, literature or data review on specific topics and writes reports as necessary. This may be related to writing proposals for funding, preparation of correspondence and documentation substantiating new initiatives, and/or special events.
