The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state. |
Posting Summary |
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Business Specialist for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position directs all financial and business matters for all funding sources related to teaching, research, and outreach for the Departments. Funding sources include state-budgeted, Hatch, designated, restricted, and endowed.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
- Provides planning, coordination, and budget development for State operational funds (AES, IDR), grant and contract funds, unrestricted funds, and faculty start-up accounts.
- Reviews all expenditures for funding availability and appropriate programmatic support of the department's strategic mission and objectives.
- Ensures that all financial activity complies with state, federal, and University regulations and with requirements of individual granting agencies.
- Exercises independent judgment and applies accounting and finance concepts, theories, practices, rules, and principles to all grant/development activities within the unit.
- Provides recommendations for making business decisions to faculty and Chair/Director.
- Analyzes account data and provide financial reports by individual faculty and departmental planning.
- Works with Technical Director and Principal Investigators of Center of Ocean Observing Leadership (COOL) within the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences (DMCS) to ensure the departments financial activity is meeting institution goal and standard.
- Extracts and compiles financial data from various sources to avoid potential deficits and ensure all expenditures are in compliance with Rutgers and sponsor guidelines, as well as processing purchasing requests and ensuring payments and invoicing are submitted accurately and in a timely manner.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with financial analysis experience in an academic setting.
- Also requires a minimum of two years relevant experience in an administrative function.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Understanding of appropriate key federal sponsor agencies and familiarity with their requirements, operations and procedures.
- Also requires skills in planning, organizing and decision-making in order to achieve results.
- Must have excellent Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and be proficient in Excel, Access and Word.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Knowledge of Rutgers software systems including Oracle Financial Management System, Tableau, HCM, ECRT reporting system, RAPSS are helpful.
- Familiarity with preparation of grant budgets and use of RAPSS. Experience working in an academic environment helpful.
- Proficient in handling diverse tasks simultaneously.
- Pleasant work disposition, good communication skills, and sound ability to follow-through with all tasks.
