The Theater department of Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts is seeking an Instructor for the following course for the spring 2025 semester:
History of Costume & Decor I
The first half of this two-part introductory research course will explore how aesthetics, design, culture, and history shape our creative understanding. Part One covers global antiquity to the 15th century, examining the movement of ideas across time and their impact on art, culture, design, and daily life. Students will use diverse research methods to build a foundation in global architecture, attire, and material culture (objects), exploring concepts of identity, narrative, and culture in theater and art.
This course meets in-person for 3 hours a week for fourteen weeks and is required for all second-year BFA students in the Scenic, Costume, and Lighting Design, and Costume Technology concentrations.
The successful applicant will have experience in (and knowledge of) the subjects of historical dress, architecture, and applied arts and will possess college-level teaching experience. A background in theatrical costume and/or scenic design is preferred, but not essential.

Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree and relevant one year of teaching and/or technical experience applicable to the course teaching. Graduate degree preferred. Strong pedagogical, organizational, administrative, and interpersonal skills.
