Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate I within the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The primary purpose of the Research Associate I position is to work under the direction of the faculty member, with the responsibility of independently conducting significant elements of a larger research activity. Designs and conducts highly specialized and technical research. The employee will conduct breast and cervical cancer research to analyze experiments relative to the understanding of oncogenic signaling and response to cancer therapies. The Montagna Lab at Rutgers Cancer Institute leverages a number of experimental approaches including single cell genomics by next generation sequencing, in situ single cell analyses of DNA and RNA, and CRISPR gene editing to induce genomic instability and study its consequences on tumor initiation, progression and therapy response. The Research Associate I will be part of a highly translational laboratory that seeks to identify underlying mechanisms of tumorigenesis and translate these findings into improved personalized therapeutic strategies for the treatment of breast and cervical cancer. May guide and train interns, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.
Among the key duties for this position are the following:

  • Performs various research and clinical technical operations independently or as assigned, relating to investigatory activities of a laboratory, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations, and conclusions. Assists and conducts independent research relevant to the interest and field of breast and cervical cancer.
  • Participates in the development of performance standards, selection of methodology and instrumentation and coordination of the analytical, biochemical, physiology and instrumentation functions with the clinical and research areas to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Conducts a continuous program of research and development regarding the analytical and instrumentation functions of the laboratory, constantly evaluates existing procedures where required to keep methodology and procedures current. As requested, assists in the implementation of the programs and projects in special areas of interest to the department.
  • Responsible for direct supervision of the work performed and teaching of research technicians, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and laboratory manager on laboratory administration and set up. Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, technicians, and laboratory assistants as required.
  • Generates, compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions, recommendations, etc. pertinent to research activity. Writes grant applications, fellowships, annual progress reports and manuscripts. Reviews and analyzes scientific data, scientific reports, publications and other documents pertaining to current research developments. Gives oral presentations of the research at lab meetings and conferences. Functions as scientific consultant in areas pertaining to specific expertise.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, or equivalent in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess effective oral and written communication skills and ability to publish scientific research papers/articles.
  • Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques, particularly in basic molecular biology methods for cloning and cell biology techniques such as tissue culture, transfection, and in vitro functional assays aimed at studying tumorigenic processes.
  • Prior hands-on experience in working with mice and expertise in mammary gland biology.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is also essential.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Adobe products.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in cancer biology research as evidenced by a strong publication record in the field, strongly preferred.
  • Experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts, and scientific reports preferred.
  • Previous experience with Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) techniques and/or genome editing approaches (CRISPR/Cas9) preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lab environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
