Position description

The University of California, Merced, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. This position is anticipated to start on July 1, 2025. We seek innovative and collaborative candidates who are committed to excellence in research, teaching, and service.

We seek a candidate with expertise in structural design, including steel, reinforced concrete and wood. With research specialization in areas including one or more of the following:

* sustainable buildings and infrastructure (e.g., green and resilient building materials life cycle assessment)

* water-related infrastructure, structural resilience to natural disasters, adaptive materials (e.g., smart, self-healing, and/or energy-absorbing materials),

* structural health monitoring (e.g., advanced sensors and the Internet of Things, data analysis and modeling)

Teaching assignments will be in the following areas:

* structural analysis and design

* geotechnical engineering

* surveying and geomatics

* engineering fundamentals

We expect the successful candidate to secure extramural funding for their efforts and to engage in interdisciplinary research with other faculty (e.g., materials science, environmental engineering, water resources, geomatics, social sciences) to solve complex societal challenges.

Career long professional development through engagement with appropriate societies and industrial partners is also encouraged to enhance the practical aspects of their research and teaching.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications

Applicants will be considered if they meet the basic qualifications of having a Ph.D. degree in civil, structural or sustainability engineering, or a related field at the time of appointment is required.

All but dissertation (ABD) candidates will be considered but will require the Ph.D. to be completed by the start date.

Preferred qualifications

Teaching experience, ranging from university teaching assistantships to leading a course.
