Job Description

Supervise Work Group Leaders and represented individual contributors. Responsible for nuclear safety/criticality control (includes handling spent fuel, fuel lab work, irradiated specimens). Oversees work with significant radiological insult (includes radiological operations and D&D of radiological facilities). Responsible for laboratory and/or facility ownership, which includes safe operation of high energy systems and/or significant environmental impact (e.g., chemical, radiological). Responsible for design or life cycle support of nuclear assets. Responsible for packaging of waste with significant radiological/environmental insult.

Essential Duties



  • Directly supervises individual contributors.
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct execution of manual work: operation, maintenance, and protection of the physical plant (i.e., the site), as well as fabrication of hardware and conducting tests.
  • Sets the work schedule for direct reports and subsequently approves the time worked.
  • Responsible for execution of assigned budget and schedule. Delegates work as appropriate.
  • Responsible for verbal communication of work and work issues for senior management.
  • Responsible for the skills development of direct reports.
  • Provides input to performance evaluations of direct reports. Provides input to compensation and hire/fire decisions for direct reports.
  • Exercises leadership qualities to influence and enlist the support of direct reports in the accomplishment of the required tasks.
  • Makes decisions guided by policies, procedures, and business plan; establishes work practices which implement policies, processes, and procedures that affect subordinate employees and the workflow of the work unit.
  • Makes decisions which have a direct impact on work unit operations.
  • Leads investigations and commonality efforts aimed at improved efficiency and effectiveness in work efforts.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Skills

  • Experience in hands-on mechanical work or other technically related work.
  • Experience performing NNPP product line activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with work groups outside of the Operations organization.
  • Knowledge of corporate policies, collective bargaining agreements, refueling instructions, and operational work practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to program mission, vision, and values.
  • Experience scheduling and managing product line work.
  • Product line experience as a Work group Leader or Shift Production Manager is highly desired.

Pay Range
$103,100.00 - $161,100.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guide line only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
