Position Summary
The Graphitization Specialist will oversee and manage the workflow within the Graphitization Laboratory at the Center for Applied Isotope Studies ( CAIS), with a focus on preparing samples for radiocarbon analysis using accelerator mass spectrometry ( AMS). This role involves the operation and maintenance of various graphitization systems, including both manual and automated equipment, and supporting laboratory instruments such as elemental analyzers, carbonate handling systems, and online isotope ratio mass spectrometers. The specialist will collaborate closely with teams across CAIS, including the Radiocarbon Dating Lab, Natural Products Lab, and AMS Lab, to ensure efficient sample preparation and analysis for radiocarbon dating, natural product authenticity, and biobased carbon determination. The Graphitization Specialist will also contribute to collaborative research efforts in fields such as archaeology, earth sciences, and materials science, participating in the development and refinement of methodologies and protocols.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of automated graphitization.
  • Direct laboratory experience.
  • Experience with USDA Soil permits.
  • Experience with Excel spreadsheets & MS Word.
  • Ability to follow procedures exactly to ensure all parts of the job are completed.
  • Good communication skills.

Sample Preparation & Coordination:

  • Oversee the logging, weighing, and encapsulation of samples for graphitization and stable isotope analysis.
  • Maintain laboratory records, ensuring proper chain-of-custody for all samples received by the Graphitization Lab.
  • Manage sample throughput to meet client deadlines and expectations regarding turnaround time.
  • Ensure proper coordination of samples between the Graphitization Lab and other CAIS labs.

  • Operate and maintain both manual and automated graphitization systems (including AGE3 and related equipment).
  • Monitor system performance, ensuring consistent accuracy and precision of results.
  • Keep detailed records of instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance checks.

  • Write, update, and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the graphitization process.
  • Provide training to technicians, students, and other lab personnel on proper laboratory procedures and equipment operation.
