Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of experience in the electrical trade under a skilled journey-level tradesperson, which includes training equivalent to that given in a two year applied skilled electrical traineeship or an apprenticeship. Training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Candidate must be able to perform physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must be able to access equipment in low places and able to move heavy objects or equipment up to 50lbs. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes"). Must successfully pass a pulmonary function test to be certified to wear protective equipment (i.e. respirators). The test shall be provided by the department.

Preferred Qualifications: Power Plant or maintenance experience with electrical systems in large commercial or institutional settings.

Description of Duties: The Trades Specialist - Electrician will be responsible for performing journey level maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, installing and repairing electrical circuits and equipment in the East and West Power Plants. As a Trades Specialist - Electrician you need to be physically able to work from ladders, scaffold, and man-lifts. Able to work in all types of weather conditions. Responds to emergencies. The incumbent must follow Power Plant Safety Policies/Procedures and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Duties to include the following.



  • Installs electrical circuits and equipment according to code.
  • Performs electrical PM and maintenance repairs on motor breakers, motor control centers, fixtures, outlets, etc. Make adjustment to electrical equipment. Test, adjust, calibrate, and maintains a wide variety of control equipment, electrical equipment and electric motors.
  • Plans, lays-out and requisitions material to complete installations or repairs to electrical equipment. Ability to read and understand drawings and/or blue prints.
  • Troubleshoots, locates faults and repairs using wiring diagrams, electrical test equipment and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Works safely and efficiently while wearing his personal protective equipment within the Power Plant environment. Responds to emergencies.
  • Ability to follow directions from senior personnel and work well with peers and subordinates. Performs housekeeping duties and maintains a clean and neat work area.
  • Operates all state vehicle in a safe manner obeying campus motor vehicle rules, regulations and parking policies. Reports accidents, safety problems or service needs promptly.
  • Other duties or project as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.


Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $48,956, Job Rate $59,757. This position includes location pay of $3,400, annually.

Seniority for promotion is the length of service in the Operational Services Bargaining Unit.
