Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry or a closely related field in hand by January 31st, 2025.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in molecular inorganic/ organometallic synthesis and catalysis.
  • Experience in the synthesis of iron complexes and air-free synthetic techniques.
  • Experience with NMR (1D and 2D), FTIR, NMR, and SC-XRD.
  • Experience with EPR and Mossbauer Spectroscopy.

Brief Description of Duties: The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator in the department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University as the Koch-Millar Postdoctoral Fellow in Inorganic Chemistry. Please visit The Bruch Lab to learn more about our department/research group. Additionally, Professor Emeritus Stephen Koch will serve as an external scientific advisor/mentor. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.

The PDA will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The successful applicant will join the PI's research group in the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook University and predominantly investigate the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of iron cyanide complexes with an initial focus on their formation and role in pre-biotic and astrochemical processes.

We are searching for a highly motivated and creative researcher that is interested in fundamental inorganic synthesis and understanding the underlying kinetics and thermodynamics that control reactivity at transition metal sites. The candidate must also have a keen interest in using various spectroscopic and characterization techniques including NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and SC-XRD.

In addition to candidates with backgrounds in molecular inorganic chemistry, we also welcome candidates with backgrounds in main-group synthesis, molecular synthesis, and physical synthetic chemistry, provided that they have a strong interest in developing skills in molecular transition metal chemistry. The candidate should also possess good verbal and written communication skills in English, the ability to work productively independently and in collaborative environments, possess strong problem-solving skills, experience in mentoring junior researchers, and a strong commitment to supporting a positive safety culture.

Regular duties will include:

  • Synthesis, purification, and characterization of organic and inorganic molecules
  • Mechanistic investigations of the formation of iron carbonyl/cyanide complexes and their subsequent reactivity and stability under prebiotic and astrochemical conditions
  • Assist in preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and/or preparing presentations for scientific conferences
  • Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission which may include attending scientific conferences and meetings, mentoring junior researchers, and upholding laboratory safety culture.

Special Notes: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
