Job Summary
Under supervision, the primary responsibility of this position is the implementation of certain aspects of the Radiation Safety Program. The position will have oversight of some Radiation Use Authorizations and the Instrumentation Program. This position will assist with timely calibration of radiation detection instrumentation, RAM shipping/receiving, and the Radiation Therapy patient program. This position is responsible for day-to-day operations of the dosimetry program and radioactive materials waste program. All duties will be performed throughout the UC Davis Medical Center and associated satellite locations. Serve as a primary back or secondary back up to other Health Physics related job duties as required. - Must possess an IATA Class 7 Shippers' Certificate or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must possess a California driver's license within three (3) months of hiring.
- B.S. in Health Physics, Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or another related field or equivalent experience/training.
- Experience working in a Radiation Safety Program (or Masters Degree in Health Physics serves as equivalency).
- Experience and knowledge of the principles of operation of health physics equipment such as radiation survey meters, laboratory counting equipment, etc.in order to maintain and calibrate radiation survey meters (or Master's Degree in Health Physics serves as equivalency).
- Experience and/or skills to develop actions using established policies as a guide.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to maintain an effective and cooperative relationship with staff, students, faculty, co-workers, public and regulatory agencies.
- Knowledge of health physics and health physics applications including the elements of a radiation safety program and ALARA principles.
- Knowledge of federal, state and Joint Commission regulatory requirements.
- Specific knowledge of CCR Title 17 requirements regarding the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines.
- Ability to effectively apply this knowledge to make improvements and solve problems.
- Ability to utilize survey meters and other portable equipment to assess and determine radiological conditions. Maintain and calibrate radiation survey meters.
- Must exercise attention to detail in order to records, documents, and files must be kept with a high degree of accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. in Health Physics, Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or another related field.
- Previous experience working under a broadscope license or specific license pertaining to the use of radioactive materials in a medical setting.
- Previous experience calculating radiation dose as it applies to exposures to patients or human subjects.
- Experience overseeing a personnel dosimetry program and in-depth knowledge of radiation dosimetry theory and practical application including knowledge of regulations to ensure exposure limits are not exceeded.
- Specific knowledge of 10CFR35 requirements.
- Ability to assess radiological conditions, determine if radiation measures are being implemented in an effective manner, analyze facts and circumstances, recognize the need for action and take steps to resolve problems.
- Ability to practice appropriate problem-solving techniques at all levels of the job.
