Job Summary:



The Data Visualization Specialist operates with a high degree of creativity and independence to solve business problems with information technology. This position will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining business intelligence solutions using tools such as Microsoft Power BI. This will involve translating business requirements into interactive and insightful reports and dashboards, as well as ensuring data integrity and accuracy. This position will work closely with the Data Architecture and Systems Analysis Program Director, Cancer Center leaders, operational managers, investigators and staff to identify key metrics and provide expertise in development of reports and dashboards used in CU Cancer Center Program evaluation and decision-making.

Serve as the primary developer for Microsoft POWER BI (PBI) and other technology platforms in the design, development, and maintenance of pertinent data visualizations for Cancer Center reporting and metrics. - 90%

Intermediate Professional:



  • Design and Develop Dashboards:

    • Create interactive and visually appealing dashboards using Power BI.
    • Maintain dataflows, semantic models, reports, and dashboards.
    • Conduct user testing and create technical documentation.


  • Data Analysis:

    • Analyze large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
    • Provide preliminary insights to support business decisions.


  • Collaboration:

    • Work with Cancer Center leaders to understand their data needs.
    • Provide actionable insights based on data analysis.

    • Document processes and methodologies for data visualization and reporting.




Senior Professional:



  • Design and Develop Dashboards:

    • Oversee the creation of interactive and visually appealing dashboards using Power BI.
    • Lead the development and maintenance of dataflows, semantic models, reports, and dashboards.
    • Ensure comprehensive user testing and high-quality technical documentation.


  • Data Analysis:

    • Conduct in-depth analysis of large datasets to identify complex trends, patterns, and insights.
    • Drive strategic business decisions with advanced data insights.


  • Collaboration:

    • Lead collaboration efforts with Cancer Center leaders to deeply understand their data needs.
    • Provide high-level, actionable insights and strategic recommendations.


  • Data Integration:

    • Integrate various data sources and build complex data models for visualization.
    • Ensure seamless data integration and model accuracy.


  • Maintain Reports:

    • Oversee the accuracy and reliability of all reports and dashboards.
    • Implement updates and improvements to reporting processes.


  • Training and Support:

    • Provide advanced training and support to team members, Cancer Center leaders, operational managers, investigators, and staff.
    • Mentor and guide intermediate team members in using Power BI and interpreting data visualizations.


  • Documentation:

    • Develop and maintain best practices for data visualization and reporting.
    • Ensure comprehensive documentation of all processes and methodologies.




Serve as a member of the Cancer Center Data Governance committee - 10%



  • Participate in design and implementation of systems and processes to ensure complete and accurate data reporting in chosen platforms (Power BI or others).
  • Develop and maintain systems for intake of data/report requests, tracking of project progress, and access to sensitive data
  • Develop and maintain data models, data visualization, dataset, build and manage workspaces, extract, transform and load data in PBI as needed to fulfill data/report requests



Work Location:



Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule to be determined by business needs.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Intermediate Professional:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • 1 year of professional level experience creating and maintaining data visualization solutions.


Senior Professional:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • At least two (2) years of professional level experience creating and maintaining data visualization solutions.


Substitution for all levels: A combination of education and related technical /professional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis. Certification as a Power BI Data Analyst through Microsoft plus a bachelor's degree in any field can be substituted for a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, data science, or related field.

Condition of Employment:



  • Proficiency in Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service, DAX (Data Analysis Expressions), and Power Query will be assessed during the interview process.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Relevant certifications in Power BI, Tableau, or similar application
  • Experience in systems implementation and end user interactions
  • Project management or similar experience
  • Experience with programming languages such as SAS, R, and SQL
  • Experience with SQL and data warehousing concepts is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) and big data technologies


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Proficiency in Power BI: Strong experience in designing and developing dashboards and reports using Power BI.
  • Creating or maintaining dataflows, semantic models, reports, and dashboards using Power BI.
  • Data Analysis: Solid understanding of data analysis techniques and tools.
  • SQL: Ability to write and optimize SQL queries for data extraction and manipulation.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills to explain complex data insights to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to Detail: High attention to detail to ensure data accuracy and quality.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:

Intermediate: $61,370-$78,063

Senior: $66,346-$84,392

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
