The Division of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director for Health Sciences Center Facilities Management.

About the Opportunity:

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Facilities Maintenance for WVU and provides leadership to the Facilities Management unit at the Health Sciences Center. Perform oversight of all facilities maintenance and custodial operations throughout Health Sciences Center and may be tasked with temporary support for maintenance activities at the Evansdale and Downtown Campus areas.

What you'll do:



  • Promote and uphold WVU's values by embedding principles of service, accountability, respect, curiosity, and appreciation into all operations.
  • Champion a safe and inclusive environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, ensuring safety protocols are woven into daily practices and procedures.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance staff development through continuous training, with a focus on policies, procedures, budgeting, and long-term goals. Foster an environment of growth by evaluating staff performance against clearly defined metrics, encouraging ongoing improvement and professional development.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of maintenance and operational activities across the Health Sciences campus, ensuring alignment with industry standards and long-term university goals.
  • Manage daily operations, ensuring all maintenance, repair, and safety measures are carried out efficiently. Utilize advanced systems, such as Unifier, to track operational performance, identify recurring issues, and implement improvement strategies.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders, including vendors, contractors, architects, and engineers, to facilitate the timely and cost-effective completion of projects. Ensure that work complies with regulations and meets campus needs.
  • Oversee departmental operations during emergency operations.
  • Continuously review and adapt the organizational structure to align personnel resources to operational requirements.
  • Take charge of developing, managing, and overseeing an operational budget exceeding $1M, ensuring the effective use of resources to meet maintenance, repair, and project needs.
  • Collaborate with finance teams to provide regular reports on budgeting, cost tracking, and resource allocation for ongoing projects. Support the alignment of budget decisions with both short-term priorities and long-range university strategies.
  • Provide accurate financial projections and cost estimates for future maintenance, repair, and capital projects by utilizing benchmarking tools and industry standards to ensure efficient use of funds.
  • Spearhead the creation and execution of a comprehensive deferred maintenance strategy, focusing on prioritizing immediate and long-term infrastructure needs through a 1-ear, 5-year, and 10-year planning approach.
  • Regularly assess the implementation of new technologies and operational techniques, identifying opportunities to improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance overall system reliability.
  • Lead the development of multi-year capital improvement plans for HSC facilities in collaboration with planning services, ensuring alignment with the university's growth and future facility needs.
  • Develop and track metrics to identify areas for improvement, set goals, and develop action plans to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of new policies and procedures to ensure full compliance with regulatory standards at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Lead risk management efforts by compiling and analyzing operational data for regulatory reports and insurance requirements, working with teams to proactively address potential issues.
  • Collaborate with university-wide committees to influence policies and contribute to institutional planning efforts, particularly related to facilities and infrastructure management.
  • Ensure maintenance personnel within the unit are trained to carry out their essential services.
  • Establish and drive policies that prioritize exceptional customer service, ensuring all teams are responsive to the needs of students, faculty, and external stakeholders.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the Health Sciences Center and external partners on operational matters such as parking, traffic flow, event coordination, and contractor management.
  • Ensure all logistical and facility support needs are met to ensure University events are executed to a high standard.
  • Lead efforts in managing and tracking all ongoing projects accomplished by HSC Maintenance staff, ensuring alignment with budgetary guidelines and timelines. Collaborate with financial teams to ensure effective tracking of costs associated with all facilities and capital improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate long-term capital projects that contribute to the strategic vision of the university, ensuring projects address deferred maintenance and future facility needs. Maintain close collaboration with campus planning and construction teams to ensure the success of capital initiatives.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Management or related field.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years experience in the following:

    • Progressive management experience in a large facilities maintenance organization.


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Ability to organize work flow and maintain schedule.
  • Ability to coordinate, supervise and motivate the work of others.
  • Ability to enforce policies, procedures and safety requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate records and submit required documentation/reports to the next level of supervision.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer for maintenance of records.
  • Ability to utilize logical problem-solving techniques .Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal codes
  • .Ability to work with people in a stressful environment. Ability to recognize normal occupational hazards.
  • Adaptability to cope with changing Maintenance, Facility and regulatory standards and requirements.
