The Naval Nuclear Laboratory's Thermal Hydraulic Design group is seeking an experienced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analyst. The role of this person will be to perform CFD analyses in support of the next generation submarine for the nuclear navy. Responsibilities will include evaluation of new design concepts, comparison of CFD model results to existing data for qualification, and use of CFD to inform decisions regarding testing, perhaps eliminating the need for certain tests. Additionally, this person will serve as a mentor to more junior engineers to ensure continuity of technically sound CFD modelling practices. This is a unique opportunity to become a part of a multi-discipline design team focused on: (1) defining the design space and technology required for a next generation attack submarine targeting high-level notional goals; and (2) evaluating reactor core cost versus performance capability trade-offs. This project is currently in the pre-conceptual design phase, and the work may be performed with simple, first-principles-based scoping tools up through detailed analyses utilizing the latest design codes. This phase will be followed by a formal core design effort requiring model development and analysis. This unit requires frequent and effective communication with other core design, materials performance, core manufacturing, and reactor plant development groups in support of the next SSN program. This position provides opportunities to influence technology development for performance gains and cost reductions. In addition, the candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, expert overall computing skills, the ability to work without close supervision and make sound independent decisions, and excellent teaming skills. Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 6 years of relevant experience; or
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part I qualified; or EDO qualified and 2 years EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or 3 years SRE qualified and Water Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and Fuel and Barrier Shift Supervisor (ECF only); or SRE qualified and 6 years of experience. The successful candidate must have outstanding technical knowledge with respect to all aspects of the CFD analysis process, including CAD geometry model preparation, CFD mesh generation (hybrid meshes up to 500 million cells), experience with a variety of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) CFD solvers, and advanced post-processing techniques to successfully communicate simulation results to non-CFD practitioners. Knowledge of and experience with state-of-the-art turbulence models, attention-to-detail abilities to ensure calculated results are accurate and trustworthy, as well as knowledge of the CFD validation process will set candidates apart in this position. Pay Range
$91,500 - $143,000 annually Note the salary information provided above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
