ENGINEER I

FARWELL, MI

As a member of the Engineering Team, the Engineer I will be responsible forperforming applied research, development, and optimization of new foam formulations and manufacturing processes; perform material testing, and product development ranging from initial phases to plant production development. Provides technical service and support to Lear sales and production staff.

The Role:

Your work will include, but not be limited to:



  • Develop formulations of polyurethane polymers and chemicals to meet specific end use and processing requirements.
  • Conduct evaluations of polyurethane raw materials.
  • Characterize polyurethane polymer materials and articles produced from the polymer materials.
  • Compute batch calculations and build lab scale batches of polyurethane systems.
  • Perform initial screening and quality control analysis of formulations using both reaction profile testing and chemical analysis procedures.
  • Manufacture test specimens and/or prototype "finished products" for demonstration purposes with high- and low-pressure foam dispensing equipment.
  • Assess the latitude and optimal values for processing parameters of polyurethane system products.
  • Perform physical testing of polyurethane polymer articles and test specimens in accordance with a broad range of test protocols specified by ASTM or other industry organizations.
  • Develop and design procedures to both evaluate polyurethane formulations and monitor their production consistency.
  • Assist in the development and design of procedures and conditions to manufacture polyurethane formulations.
  • Record pertinent research and development in logbooks and other documents. Draft research and development communications periodically as needed.
  • Work with suppliers to complete competitive analysis between different chemical groups.
  • Develop and optimize foam manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot production issues and implement solutions.
  • Analyze data and performance metrics to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in foam production technology.
  • Procure laboratory equipment and materials required to complete assigned projects.
  • Provide basic routine maintenance and engineering for laboratory processing equipment and testing apparatus as needed.
  • Assist corporate tooling engineering staff in the design and engineering of tools required to complete assigned projects.
  • Assist in routine laboratory housekeeping chores and laboratory support duties.
  • Provide customers and clients with technical bulletins, material safety data sheets and other written documents that are pertinent to assigned projects.
  • Periodically provide technical support to the sales staff and plant manufactures and quality assurance staff on assigned projects.
  • Present and share current ideas and projects with the Lear Global Engineering team monthly.
  • Provide support and knowledge to the Polyurethane Systems Team and assist in identifying, preventing, and solving current obstacles.


Your Qualifications:



  • Master's or Bachelor's Chemical Engineering Degree.
  • 2+ Years' Experience in Manufacturing Chemical Engineering.
  • Right-to-Know/Hazardous Communication.



Bonus If You Have:



  • Knowledge and understanding of polyurethane chemistry and familiarity with polyurethane processing.
  • Knowledge of industry regulations and safety standards.
  • Manufacturing and Automotive Experience.
