JOB SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to provide responsible technical assistance in performance of assignments requiring basic knowledge of techniques and practices related to particular field of science.

A Research Technician II position is available in the laboratory of James Kim, MD, PhD, in the Hamon Center for Therapeutic Oncology Research at UT Southwestern Medical Center to study the biology of lung cancer. As a valued member of the laboratory, you will be integral to our research efforts. Dr. Kim is a physician-scientist who treats lung cancer and head and neck cancer patients and leads a basic and translational science laboratory. The Kim laboratory focuses on elucidating the role of fundamental developmental pathways in cell autonomous mechanisms and tumor-stromal interactions that lead to lung cancer development and metastasis. For our studies, we employ endogenous and transplant mouse models of cancer, patient-derived xenograft models, genomic, cell, molecular and biochemical techniques, flow cytometry and microscopy and in vivo imaging techniques. Several of the ongoing projects include:



  • Identify the critical members of the cross-talk between transformed lung epithelial cells and lung fibroblasts initiated by Indian Hedgehog that inhibits tumor growth, progression and metastasis.
  • Elucidate the in vivo cross-talk between human small cell lung cancer epithelial cells and stromal cells that govern drug-resistance and metastasis.
  • Identify critical drivers of mutant SMARCA4 lung cancers as targets for new therapies.
  • The candidate will be involved in all aspects of our research. Candidates must also have experience working with mice or be willing to work with mice.


Specific responsibilities include:



  • Genotype and phenotype mice.
  • Maintenance of mouse colony.
  • Assist in experiments that include tissue culture, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and in vivo mouse studies.
  • Maintain the laboratory and equipment in working and clean conditions.
  • Assist in maintenance of laboratory compliance to safety regulations. Isolate, maintain, and culture cells.
  • Order reagents and materials and oversee inventory.
  • Maintains laboratory records, supplies, samples in an organized manner.


Lab duties will include:



  • Assists in conducting experiments in cancer biology research problems including, cell and molecular biology, tissue culture, chemistry and other related fields by performing basic, routine, and least complex procedures as prescribed by supervisor.
  • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Records resulting data in accordance with established methods.
  • Confers with supervisor concerning results obtained and modifies procedures in accordance with instruction of supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required



  • Education
    Bachelor's Degree With major coursework in field of assignment and no experience or
    Two (2) years of college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment or
    High School Diploma or GED


  • Experience
    No experience required with Bachelor's Degree or
    2 years Of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent with two (2) years of college or
    4 years Of laboratory experience including two years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent with High School Graduation/GED


JOB DUTIES




    • Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
    • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
    • Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
    • Assists in collection of data for project reports.
    • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
    • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
