Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Assistant for the Waksman Institute of Microbiology. This position carries out research in the area of C. elegans genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry. In addition to conducting research on the project, the Laboratory Assistant requires some laboratory maintenance, such as maintaining lab strains and preparing media.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs routine tasks involved in operating, maintaining, and cleaning various types of laboratory equipment.
  • Prepares media and specimens.
  • Feeds and waters laboratory animals or plants.
  • Stocks and distributes supplies and equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A high school education/vocational school education or equivalent.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • The ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • The person must be well organized and be able to efficiently undertake several tasks or experiments concurrently.
  • The person should be familiar with and have performed common techniques used in molecular biology and C. elegans experiments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers a bachelors degree in biology and 2 years laboratory assistant experience in a C. elegans lab.
  • College-level science laboratory study, laboratory technical training, or related lab experience is preferred
  • Lab experience in molecular biology and C. elegans culture is essential.
  • General background in biology and biochemistry and have a thorough background in the principals and methods used in modern molecular biology.
  • A good background in C. elegans biology.
  • The person should be able to keep accurate and complete notes on all the experiments conducted.
  • Understanding of the culture and experimental manipulation of C. elegans.
