Position Description


Primary Purpose and Essential Functions
The Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific announces a part-time, non-tenure-track appointment for an Assistant Professor of Practice in trumpet. We seek a dynamic and innovative teacher/performer whose background, professional performing accomplishments, and pedagogy will attract and retain students to the wide variety of program offerings at Pacific's Conservatory. Excellent applied lesson teaching is the primary responsibility. Pacific invites candidates interested in growing trumpet enrollments sufficient to sustain a future full-time level appointment.
Non-tenure-track faculty members collaborate to fulfill the University's mission to provide a superior, student-centered learning experience integrating liberal arts and professional education and prepare individuals for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities.
Part-time faculty are appointed as needed by each unit and considered as less than full-time annual appointment as specified by each unit. Part-time is determined by the unit based on a comparison to year-long appointments. Time of service on a part-time appointment may not accrue to time for appointment with tenure.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree or its equivalent in the field of specialization; a candidate without a master's degree must have equivalent educational or professional experience in the appropriate area of instructional responsibility.
  • Evidence of exemplary teaching experience and of scholarly or artistic achievements.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven evidence of the ability to attract, retain, and inspire diverse students across multiple areas of interest.
  • An ability to develop, mentor, and teach forward-thinking and relevant 21st century musicians at a level appropriate to their major.
  • Demonstrated ability as a performer and collaborator with faculty colleagues as a chamber musician, soloist, and in other educational settings.
  • Experience in developing multi-faceted and entrepreneurial musical concepts that can be delivered through studio teaching, performance, and/or in class settings. Being a part of a highly motivated and invested faculty that puts student learning at the forefront of the university's mission.
  • A demonstrated commitment to inclusion and equity as a foundational strength in music and education.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Physical Requirements

Frequent sitting and computer use. Occasional walking, standing, bending, kneeling and use of the phone. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with the use of computers and phone. Work performed during standard business hours between 8 AM and 5 PM. Occasional overtime required to meet critical business deadlines. May require some nights and weekends.
Hiring Range $77-$80 per clock-hour of applied lessons, and $2,300 per credit unit. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational consider
