Job Summary

The Histology Laboratory at San Francisco General Hospital's Anatomic Pathology Department is the receiving and processing point for tissue and cytology specimens taken from surgical and biopsy procedures. Histotechnologists are involved in every step of the specimen preparation and testing required for a pathologist's microscopic evaluation and diagnosis of a patient sample. The histotechnologist's technical skills include: tissue processing and embedding, preparing tissue sections for microscope slides, routine H&E staining, and performing special stains to reveal important tissue elements. At the request of a pathologist, a Histotechnologist 2 is expected to independently perform more complex tasks such as specimen grossing or diagnostic testing utilizing immunohistochemistry (IHC), in-situ hybridization (ISH) or immunofluorescence (IF) techniques.

A Histotechnologist is actively involved in the quality management of the Histology Laboratory and maintains the laboratory space, equipment and records to the high standard required for a clinical service. This position requires excellent problem solving and time management skills to prioritize tasks effectively and complete tasks in a timely manner with a minimum of supervision.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $53.65 - $66.82 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Pathology at UCSF aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UCSF. Our educational programs include a research-intensive academic residency program and fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology and surgical pathology.

Required Qualifications


  • An AA or Bachelor's degree in a biological, physical science or an equivalent combination of college coursework in Biology, Physical Sciences, Chemistry and Mathematics; or ASCP certification as an HT/HTL.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a hospital laboratory environment performing histology procedures including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, special stains and H&E staining.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and multi-tasking skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • ASCP certification as an HT/HTL.
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry, direct immunofluorescence and in-situ hybridization.
  • Gross room experience involving specimen accessioning and cutting in small biopsies.
