Access Control Technician

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of directly related full-time physical electronic security installation experience. In lieu of the degree, an Associate's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and four (4) years of directly related experience or six (6) years of directly related full-time experience may be considered. Line and/or low voltage electrical experience. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Workspace. Experience with Lenel electronic card access systems. Familiar with CCTV camera hardware products.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Access Control Technician will be responsible for the installation, documenting, troubleshooting, and maintenance of CCTV cameras, card access systems, alarm systems, and other devices in accordance with Stony Brook University Access Control Standards. The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.



  • Departmental Liaison:

    • Provides on-site technical guidance to lower-level mechanics in the execution of whole-department or special sub-department security upgrade projects.
    • Coordinates the activities of subcontractors in the completion of whole-department scale projects.
    • Provides technical coordination and client liaison in the implementation of major and minor campus rekeying and access security upgrade projects.
    • Provides technical guidance to lower-level staff and contractors.


  • Strategic Initiatives:


    • Assists with the design of electrical physical security systems.
    • Estimates scope and cost of access control upgrade projects, in direct consultation with access control manager or asst manager.
    • Advises senior management on options and strategies for maintaining and enhancing campus-wide building security.
    • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.


  • Coordinating System Programming:

    • Coordinate security system programming including intrusion alarm software, CCTV camera software and electronic card access software.
    • Use laptop computers and/or tablets to troubleshoot security Systems in the field (alarms, CCTV, and card access) both independently and with remote IT support.


  • Administration:

    • Maintains, submits, and revises accurate paperwork and documentation.
    • Estimates scope and cost of access control upgrade projects, in direct consultation with representatives of other associated UPD and/or University public safety units.
    • Advises on security devices for new or newly constructed facilities within the parameters of existing University resource protection policies.
    • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
    • Creates customer security solutions in accordance with existing access control policies.
    • Ensures installations are completed on-time and within budget.
    • Applies current resource protection policies and protocols to the selection of appropriate electronic and/or mechanical access control devices.


  • Alarm Systems:

    • Provide electrical drawings of systems installed in the field, as needed.
    • Troubleshoot electrical problems in the field, identify their source, and coordinate repair.
    • Troubleshoot alarm systems and coordinate the repair.
    • Work with various manufacturers' technical support branches to troubleshoot problems and then coordinate repair problems as necessary.
    • Provide reports to assistant manager and manager as required.


  • Locks and Access Control:

    • Coordinates the installation, programming, and repair of electronic access controls, to include proximity card and swipe card hardware.
    • Research new approaches to access control using current methodologies and be further trained in the ongoing needs of the University to meet new goals.
    • Make recommendations to modify existing access control systems and existing alarm systems.


  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.



Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
