JOB SUMMARY: A shipfitter with approximately 2 to 3 years of experience laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting parts of structural metal products with the use of regular supervision and while always adhering to industry safety standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Positions, aligns, fits, and welds parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools 2. Verifies conformance of work-pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes 3. Tack-welds fitted parts together 4. Lays out and examines metal stock or work-pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met 5. Aligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers 6. Locates and marks work-piece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications 7. Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting 8. Studies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequences 9. Moves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes 10. Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal components 11. Performs other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 1. Ability to cut/grind in preparation for welding 2. Ability to measure, cut, grind small parts, foundations and other structural members 3. Proficient use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch) 4. Basic reading, interpreting and utilization of blueprints 5. Proficient use of temporary attachments 6. Basic understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, and bevels) 7. Proficient in installation and removal of fasteners and rivets 8. Can differentiate base material types and thicknesses 9. Qualified tack welder in common shipboard positions 10. Ability to learn intermediate fitting operations (coping, straightening, carbon arcing) 11. Basic understanding of material fabrication 12. Recognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application) 13. Ability to read ruler/measuring tape 14. Intermediate use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills etc.) 15. Intermediate use of hand tools (hammers, punches, etc.) 16. Correct set up of tools prior to use (running lines, drop tests, etc.) 17. Knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction and pinch points) 18. Intermediate use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges, rams, saddles) 19. Ability to learn shipbuilding standards (009-12, W1689) 20. Ability to learn basic inspection standards (009-25, 009-06) 21. Understands fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning firewatches, 35' rule, etc.) 22. Ability to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areas 23. Practical knowledge of industry safety standards/training 24. Requires periodic supervision to accomplish work JOB REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school diploma or GED and 2 to 3 years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience 2. Ability to gain access to military installations 3. Must be able to pass drug test and background check PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds 2. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places.
