The University of Southern California (USC) Leonard Davis School of Gerontology is seeking a Distance Education Operations Supervisor to join our staff and student community. This role is responsible for supervising staff and daily control room operations for the distance education activities of the school as well as providing overall technical support to faculty, staff, and students related to technology (specifically computer hardware and software). Provides training and support of instructional technologies for the studio systems and delivery of e-Learning Systems and services. Contributes to the establishment and maintenance of software and documentation libraries. Assists with evaluating and maintaining standards of quality in delivery of e-Learning Systems and services.

Additional requirements: experience in managing hardware and software both Apple OS and Windows OS servers and computers.

Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Dean, Maria Henke. The Distance Education Operations Supervisor will work in collaboration with the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of hardware and software (both Apple OS and Windows OS servers and computers). This involves all monitoring and maintenance required for servers to operate reliably at optimal performance levels. This includes managing hardware, software, security, and backups to keep the information technology environment operational and efficient. The network environment administration and workstation setup including Apple OS and Windows OS laptops and computers. In addition, experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) is required and Brightspace is preferred. The ideal candidate will also have excellent communication skills, the ability to gather and analyze data pertaining to information technology and provide feedback and recommendations to the supervisor. The ideal candidate should be knowledgeable about computer hardware and be able to make repairs and adjustments as needed. Must have a demonstrated ability to train and supervise others. Knowledge of and experience working in higher education is preferred.

Roles and responsibilities to include:

  • Supervise control room operation and staff to accommodate the instructional operations and classroom schedule
  • Schedules and assigns work to other employees and provides guidance and feedback to staff and/or student workers
  • Ensures smooth operation of live and recorded courses by distance education instructors. Supervises instructor support for classroom activities and related peripherals, including computers, electronic boards, webcast encoder applications, and interactive technologies. Assists with evaluating and maintaining standards of quality in the delivery of e-Learning Systems and services.
  • Installs and troubleshoots software and hardware in all studio classroom facilities including computers, encoding devices, interactive technologies and equipment, and/or other instructional equipment. Maintains and troubleshoots network connectivity.
  • Monitors and maintains all servers for use in instruction and research
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess at minimum a Bachelor's degree in computer science or related area. Master's degree preferred. At least 3-5 years of experience managing hardware and software (Apple OS and Windows OS serves and computers). Experience working in the higher education field is ideal.

This is an exempt position with work expected in the Andrus Gerontology Center 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM during normal hours of operation and after hours and on weekends as needed. Some travel for training and conferences to maintain skills and knowledge is required.

The annual base salary range for this position is $80,108.67-90,621.63. Minimum Education: High school or equivalent
Minimum Experience: 2 years
Minimum Skills:
- Experience with capturing and delivering e-Learning Systems (via web and other electronic formats) and providing interactive conferencing set-up and support (web, phone, and audio/visual conferencing).
- Supervisory level experience with e-Learning Systems and services.
- Knowledge of support of instructional operations and technologies inside studio classrooms (e.g., computers, electronic boards, other interactive conferencing technologies).
- Knowledge of computing environments and specific support for e-Learning hardware and software.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Media technology and Real Networks streaming services essential.
- TCIP/IP-based networking and computer support and troubleshooting experience.
- Knowledge of networks and digitizing process.
