ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB is actively seeking a talented and dedicated Survey Data Technician for our Atlanta, GA office as part of a 2-person survey crew. This entry-level job will take you off the beaten path around the metro-Atlanta area and throughout the State of Georgia. You will learn the ins and outs of surveying and basic mapping skills under the direction of experienced surveyors. Responsibilities:

    Assist the Survey Crew Chief in the activities of a survey crew performing Boundary/ALTA surveys, Topographic surveys, Construction and post-construction surveys, and transportation surveys.
  • Search for, locate, and recover existing survey markers, including stones and property irons, and set out stakes and other markers as required.
  • Compile and verify preexisting data from photographs, previous surveys, maps, deeds, legal descriptions, and other sources to ensure accuracy.
  • Lay out grids, position rods, and operate measuring instruments such as theodolites, prisms, and electronic tools.
  • Record data using electronic devices, image-capturing software, drawings, and detailed notes, and perform double-checks for accuracy.
  • Inventory and maintain survey equipment, including vehicles, electronics, brush-cutting tools, and plotters.
  • Use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software to create technical drawings for topographical and boundary surveys.
  • Collaborate effectively with other members of the survey party, following direction from the lead surveyor, instructing and assisting subordinates, and working independently as needed.
  • Clear brush, transport tools and materials over uneven terrain, and retrieve stakes, rebar, and other materials from the site upon project completion.
  • Maintain proper care of survey equipment and ensure readiness for various weather conditions and outdoor elements.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient in reading, understanding, and ability to learn and evaluate the significance of survey, right-of-way, engineering and architectural drawings with respect to each survey project
  • Ability to learn and operate a robotic total station with electronic data collecting capability
  • Proficient in fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry a plus, but not required
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
  • Desire for continued growth in the Land Surveying profession

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of geomatics experience, whether through coursework or professional land surveying experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience with Trimble Robotics, Trimble GPS, Carlson BRX GPS, Leica Robotics desirable, but not required
  • Experience with drone mapping and/or FAA Part 107 license a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) desirable, but not required
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be willing to travel and stay overnight for assignments outside local area (anticipated to be less than 30% of assignments, and we accommodate family schedules and responsibilities as much as possible.)
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
