POSITION TITLE: VETERINARIAN II

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Veterinary Services, the Veterinarian II will provide exceptional veterinary care and support to investigators for diagnostic and preventive health, while also offering expertise to research scientists in the design and implementation of in vivo research protocols. The Veterinarian II will collaborate closely with top-tier scientists and play a key role in the planning and long-term management of resources, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, and upholding AAALAC accreditation standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Veterinary Care & Scientific Support



  • Oversees and provides comprehensive veterinary care, including preventative medicine, surgeries, post-surgical care, anesthesia, and euthanasia.
  • Oversees and performs physical exams, collects diagnostic samples, and delivers treatment and follow-up care.
  • Oversees and participates in daily and weekly animal health rounds to monitor and maintain the health of research animals.
  • Participates in the emergency on-call rotation to provide timely veterinary care when needed.
  • Provides guidance on developing animal models, animal care, and biomethodology.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of research programs to meet the evolving needs of the scientific staff.


Regulatory Compliance & Husbandry Standards



  • Reviews IACUC & IBC protocols, assists human safety risk analyses, and conducts veterinary monitoring for research activities.
  • Assists preparation of accreditation and regulatory reports and prepares for and participates in site visits and inspections (e.g., AAALAC, USDA, OLAW).
  • Assists with specialized housing needs, and develops standards for animal husbandry, including for ventilated caging, biocontainment, and quarantine areas.
  • Completes health certificates and assists compliance with foreign animal transport regulations.


Administrative Support & Training



  • Develops SOPs and best practice guidelines, proactively evaluating and providing recommendations for process improvements in areas such as, but not limited to, anesthesia, analgesia, records, training, facility management practices impacting animal welfare, animal biosecurity, human safety, regulatory oversight, and euthanasia.
  • Provides input for budgeting, cost accounting, and supply estimates, as well as for hiring, training, and performance evaluations of veterinary technicians.
  • Oversees and assists in coordinating and implementing training and continuing education programs for animal care and research staff.
  • Commensurate with experience, may be assigned as supervisor of one or more veterinary staff, facilitate career growth, conduct performance evaluations, and collaborate on employee relations.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Credentials



  • DVM from an AVMA accredited institution or ECFVG certificate, with a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state.
  • ACLAM Board Certified or eligible, with a commitment to achieve certification upon hire.
  • USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Category II (or ability to obtain upon hire) and DEA registration for controlled substances.
  • Clearance to work in an ABSL3 facility (or ability to obtain upon hire).


Skills and Experience



  • Minimum of 3-5 years of specialty training and/or experience in laboratory animal medicine.
  • Expertise in evaluating the health and well-being of species used in laboratory animal medicine, with strong knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry, surgical, and medical procedures commonly performed on laboratory animals.
  • Familiarity with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards, along with experience in IACUC and IBC activities, including teaching and training responsibilities.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with DAR, IACUC staff, Scripps faculty, and researchers.
  • Proficiency in basic computing systems, web-based applications, and Microsoft Office.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures; lifting up to 40lbs.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $150,000 to $173,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
