JOB SUMMARY

Works under general supervision to perform decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the ambulatory clinics, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process. The technician is also responsible for ordering/logging instruments being used and collaborating with the clinics to ensure proper handling/storage is being done.

  • <1 year to three (3) years or greater experience handling/distributing medical/surgical instruments and equipment. and

    Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
Preferred
  • Licenses and Certifications

JOB DUTIES
  • Unload dirty case carts and prepare instruments/supplies/equipment for decontamination. Decontaminate instruments/supplies/equipment per manufacturer's instructions and departmental policies and procedures. Inspect decontaminated items for cleanliness and damage. Test decontaminated items to ensure proper functioning prior to sterilization. Makes rounds as appropriate to need.
  • Handle items carefully and prevent damage to delicate instruments. Identify broken, damaged instruments/malfunctioning equipment and remove from service. Communicate items removed from service to Central Sterile Processing Supervisor/Coordinator in a timely manner.
  • Identify proper method of sterilization per item to be sterilized. Properly prepare and assemble instruments/supplies/equipment per appropriate method of sterilization. Select and use appropriate packaging/wrapping materials/container systems for method of sterilization and aseptic presentation. Ensure filters are properly assembled in container systems prior to sterilization.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate sterilization documentation and recordkeeping by maintaining permanent records and test results. Properly label packages/items/container systems to be sterilized with the appropriate sterilization information and initials of preparer.
  • Properly operate various methods of sterilization. Set correct cycle parameters and utilize correct chemical process indicators per steam, sterrad, gas, or steris sterilization.
  • Properly load, operate, and unload the ultrasonic washer and washer sterilizer according to manufacturer's instructions. Prepare and use disinfectants/chemicals according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Perform correct biological monitoring/testing per method of sterilization. Recognize positive test results of biological monitoring and immediately rechallenge the sterilizer. Immediately communicate positive test results to the healthcare team and declare method of sterilization unsafe for use.
  • Inspect and clean steam sterilizers on a routine basis. Perform daily Bowie-Dick testing of prevacuum sterilizers and diagnostic testing on steris machine prior to use each day.
  • Organize and prioritize processing tasks based on identified need. Perform processing duties in a cost effective manner. Issue instruments/supplies/equipment promptly and accurately. Participate in unit based performance improvement activities. Makes rounds as appropriate.
  • Serve as a subject manner resource person and/or preceptor to new staff. Provide feedback/input for clinical performance evaluation form.
  • Wear appropriate personnel protective equipment while on duty. Comply with departmental work patterns regarding workflow, air flow, and people flow.
