Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the UW MARS Livestock Manager, this position performs and directs daily work operations of a large dairy heifer and lactating cow research operation. This includes general husbandry tasks such as feeding, milking, cleaning, treating, reproductive healthcare, animal observations and dairy cattle handling, and the facilitation of research. This position participates in herd health duties, animal care procedures and management of the reproduction program. This position will function as lead to Animal Care Technician staff on the MARS research farm when no on-site livestock supervisor is available.

Responsibilities:
Serves as a resource and lead to other technicians and student employees; collects samples, administers medication and treatments, and performs feeding and maintenance responsibilities to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and in support of research and instruction.
- 30% Leads the day-to day operational activities of an animal care work unit and facilitates staff training as needed
- 15% Collects samples from animals and administers medications, injections, and treatments according to established protocols and procedures to be used for diagnostic and research
- 10% Cleans and maintains organization of animal holding spaces
- 5% Tracks inventory levels of animal supplies and places replenishment orders
- 5% Prepares food and formulas and feeds animals according to established schedules and specifications
- 5% Maintains organization of and updates records related to work unit procedures
- 20% Observes animal behavior, performs animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals in support of research and instruction
- 10% Maintains Reproductive status of the herd

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: -Minimum of two years working in dairy, including milking, feeding, dairy reproduction, maintaining animal hygiene and cleanliness. -Experience administering medications and treatments to cattle, delivered topical, oral, intramammary, subcutaneous, intravenous, and intramuscular. Understands treatment withdrawal periods. -Familiar with record keeping and electronic cattle management software such as health monitoring, inventory management, reproductive management, feed management, performance tracking. -Understands animal handling and dairy cattle well-being including cow comfort as it pertains to ventilation, enrichment, housing and bedding, and low-stress livestock handling. -Experience with equipment operation necessary to work in a dairy to include 50hp - 100 hp tractors, skidloaders and corresponding attachments, bedding spreaders, cattle trailers, etc.
Preferred Qualification: -Understanding of basic nutritional needs of dairy animals at various stages such as newborns, calves, heifers, dry cows, and lactating cows at various stages of production.
Work Schedule:
Normal hours are 4:30 am - 1:00 pm, five days a week. Position is scheduled to work every other weekend. Position will work at least 5 of the 9 observed legal holidays.

Salary:
Minimum $22.50 HOURLY Depending on Qualifications The anticipated salary range for this position is $22.50 - $23.50. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
