JOB SUMMARY The Department of Radiation Oncology at the UT Southwestern Medical Center has a new opportunity available for a Coding Specialist I. This position is a key member of the department's billing team. Responsibilities for this role will include but is not limited to the following:
- Requires detailed knowledge of medical insurance benefits along with knowledge of coding guidelines.
- Access to UT Southwestern resources regarding managed care contracts.
- Requires extreme attention to accuracy, strong service and compassion for our patients.
- Must be a team player with excellent teamwork skills; interacts with registration and scheduling staff, providers, insurance companies, and members of the billing team.
- Performs complex policy analysis for managed care issues by reviewing contracts, writing clause revisions, making recommendations for reimbursement policy changes, reviewing reports and financial data, and analyzing fee schedules, encounter forms, diagnosis, and procedure codes; ensures coding follows appropriate coding guidelines.
- Ensures projects related to coding are completed on time and changes are implemented appropriately.
- Attends meetings and activities associated with team building when needed.
- Documents findings of inquiry and opinion letters.
- Works under general supervision to perform entry level coding activities in a manner that meets productivity and quality standards as established by the coding leadership.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Work From Home (WFH): This position will work from home. Additional details related to this shall be discussed as part of the interview process. Knowledge of Correct Coding Initiatives (CCI), Epic electronic health record systems and 3M coding software
JOB DUTIES
- Performs accurate and timely review of entry level, coding, and abstracting of UTSW accounts utilizing ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, and CPT-4 code sets as indicated and according to coding team procedures.
- Performs basic coding activities in a manner that meets productivity and quality standards as established by the coding leadership.
- Maintains current understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, coding guidelines, and teaching physician documentation guidelines and grows knowledge through participation in continuing education programs.
- Assists in upholding coding team expectations of effective communications, including , customer service standards, professionalism, operating procedures, processes, and other team strategies and goals.
- Assist in promoting a culture of support, continuous learning, and team work.
- Adheres to all UTSW and departmental policies and procedures to include the Remote Coding Agreement where applicable.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
