Do you have strong analytic skills and a problem-solving mindset? Join Fairfax County's award-winning organization, Wastewater Management, a team that is responsible for protecting both the public's health and the region's water quality.

We are seeking a well-qualified IT professional with extensive experience in telecommunications systems, exceptional interpersonal communication skills, and excellent customer service to support Wastewater Management employees.

This position is primarily responsible for the following tasks:

  • Responds to Wastewater management IT service calls, and support telecommunications equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting and resolving a variety of network, desktop, server, field device, handheld, and/or remote access issues.
  • Provides desktop, technical support and training to all computer users in Wastewater Management.
  • Monitors the status of computing hardware, software and peripherals using standard techniques and automated tools.
  • Provides technical support on managing camera systems.
  • Able to utilize low-level logs, consoles, and reports to identify potential problems.
  • Resolves issues using well documented procedures.
  • Escalates complex issues to assigned support staff.
  • Plans with vendors to schedule hardware service when necessary.
  • Experience in the installation, configuration and management of agency workstation/laptop in a LAN/WAN environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skill.

Note: Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Possession of an associate degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, or a related field; plus two years network and/or telecommunications experience; or a bachelor's degree in such fields.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid motor vehicle operator's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years of experience with Active Directory, ODBC, MS Office 365, Windows 7/8/10, TCP/IP, Ethernet, and HW/SW troubleshooting.
  • Three (3) years of experience inspecting newly installed telecommunication equipment and installing, configuring, repairing, maintaining / operating testing of telecommunication systems including: LAN, WAN, switched equipment, voice communications, surveillance cameras.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to translate technical terminology into terms understandable to management and employees
  • Knowledge and/or 1 year of working experience in the Wastewater management type 24/7 operational environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from computer. Frequent exposure to loud noises and rare exposure to airborne substances. Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb stairs. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must have good vision and hearing. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
