Job Summary

The Senior Financial and Grants Manager manages a designated part of the research financial portfolio for the Department of Emergency Medicine and has oversight over the entire portfolio. The incumbent establishes and aligns research finance driven procedures and processes with overall departmental financial and UCSF processes. The Senior Financial and Grants Manager also applies their skills and knowledge to other externally funded projects, such as clinical projects funded by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Benioff Children's Hospitals Foundation, etc. The individual ensures the protection of departmental research assets and compliance with governing financial, research and operational policies and procedures. This position leads and maintains research finance and financial reporting related communication at designated DEM sites and closely partners with the Research Manager on research finance items impacting research operations across the department.

The position manages research financial systems, execution of departmental procedures and provides analytical, operational and financial support for research proposal processing, contract and grant administration, budget development, including pre-award proposal initiatives, management of post-award, and closeout activities for federal, state, local and private sponsors including intramural awards together with the department's research portfolio. Other core reporting responsibilities include regular financial reporting and analysis, report optimization, and coordination of report delivery.

This position also has general finance responsibilities. These include project management related to finance operations improvement, complex financial analysis, journal and salary cost transfer preparation and approval, and monthly reporting.

This position supervises the Senior Financial and Grants Analyst(s) and Research and Grants Finance Analyst(s).

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $136,000 - $222,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) provides emergency medical care to over 175,000 patients annually at the UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals at Mission Bay and Oakland and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. DEM administrative and research staff supports the work of 87 full-time faculty and 70+ attending physicians, a residency program, fellowship programs and over 300 house staff and students each year. Required Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience
  • Expert knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems
  • Ability to identify, collect, analyze, and report on complex data
  • Expert ability to effectively communicate complex information to management both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner
  • Expert interpersonal and consultative skills requiring organizational savvy; expert service orientation and critical thinking skills; attention to detail. Expert ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to function as a member of a team
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources

Preferred Qualifications


  • Requires skills in project management, leadership, and process re-design
  • Expert ability using multiple spreadsheet and database software tools to synthesize and integrate information for highly complex, strategic financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports
